Dorpsstraat runs along a medieval dike that was known as Waalbandijk until around 1860. Because of a fordable point in the Waal, Wamel was located on an old Roman trade route. The churches also tell the story of the village’s long development. The Hervormde Kerk includes the 5/8-closed choir and the transept of the parish church built in the 15th century, which was restored from 1952 to 1957. The Protestant church in Wamel was first mentioned in writing in a document dating from 1129 to 1134. Its organ was built by Hermanus Knipscheer in 1865.
