Holiday apartment in Stokkum – Hiking on the Hulzenberg

Stokkum lies at the foot of the Hulzenberg, which is part of the Bergherbos; the Bergherbos is also known as Montferland. This landscape combines wooded slopes with trails, traces of cultural history, and viewpoints. The short route to the observation tower, the different variants of the Staickheimerpad, and the historical evidence give Stokkum a variety of distinctive features.

The Bergherbos provides a habitat for pine martens, badgers, and European honey buzzards. The Stokkumse zandbulten lie on the slopes of the Hulzenberg near Stokkum.

The Staickheimerpad leads through the hilly surroundings of Stokkum, through the Bergherbos, across gently rising fields, and past cultural heritage. The trail is available in 9, 11, and 16 km variants and starts at Restaurant - Terras ’t Klaphek, ’s-Heerenbergseweg 2 in Stokkum. The route length can be adapted to the available time before setting out, without changing the starting point at the restaurant in Stokkum. The section of the Staickheimerpad along the Eltenseweg has been permanently changed. Printed leaflets still show the old route; therefore, use the current map on the website or in the Klompenpaden app.

A 2.4 km return hike from the Hulzenberg car park on the Eltenseweg in Stokkum leads through a heathland area to the observation tower on the Hulzenberg. The viewing platform is reached by climbing 104 steps; from there, you can look out over the Achterhoek, the Liemers, and the German border region. As a historic route connection, the Möllepaedje adds another local feature: it connects Molenbult and the Gildestraat and is one of the old church paths that Stokkum once had.

Discover culture and history

Düffels Möll was built in 1861 at an elevated location outside the village of Stokkum. The mill was successfully restored in 1986 and has been operating again since 1988. Stokkum’s Hagelkruis also directs attention to the past: it was mentioned as early as 1624 and belongs to the Liemers type. St. Suitbertus Church has a cruciform floor plan with short arms. It was built in 1915 under Pastor G. van Sonsbeeck; Jac. van Gils and Joh. van Dongen are regarded as the church’s architects.

Stokkum was first mentioned in writing as Stokhem in 1240. Finds in the ground point even further back, indicating that the woods around Stokkum were already inhabited 2,500 years ago. The 2.4 km return hike therefore contrasts with the 9, 11, and 16 km distances of the Staickheimerpad in Stokkum as significantly longer routes; the choice of route thus follows the time available for the respective outing.
