A holiday apartment in Asperen takes you to a place whose character is shaped by the history of the Waterlines, preserved fortifications, and routes along the Linge. Wapenplaats Asperen is part of the UNESCO World Heritage site Hollandse Waterlinies. On the town’s three landward sides, the Vestingwal has been preserved together with the moat; the restored city wall surrounds Asperen and offers walks with views of the Linge and the locks. This makes the discovery of the town begin with tangible traces of water management and defence.

Holiday apartment in Asperen between forts and town history

Wapenplaats Asperen is the smallest fort of the Nieuwe Hollandse Waterlinie. Fort bij Asperen is also part of the town’s distinctive fortification history: it was built as a tower fort from 1840 onwards. Today, it houses the Museum Sky of Hope, which presents stories from the Second World War. At Fort bij Asperen, volunteers offered guided tours of the tower fort, sharing stories about the Hollandse Waterlinies. This combines a visit to historic buildings with different ways of engaging with the past.

Churches, locks and distinctive architectural forms

The religious buildings also give Asperen a distinctive architectural profile. St Catharina’s Church is a late-Gothic cruciform church with a pseudo-basilical nave resting on columns, a deep choir closed on five sides, and wooden barrel vaults over the nave, choir and transept; the side aisles have half-barrel vaults. The tower of the Hervormde Kerk is a tall brick building dating from the end of the 15th century. The history of the water landscape also includes the Lingesluizen bij Asperen, which were an essential part of the flood-control system in the area between the Lek and the Waal.

Walks along the Linge

For peaceful yet informative routes, Asperen offers several different starting points. Het geheim van Asperen is an interactive app game through the historic centre, in which several locations in Asperen are visited via puzzle points. Along the dike slopes of the Merckenburgsepad are wet woodlands and swamps with abundant flora and fauna. The Merckenburgsepad follows dikes along the Linge through the riverside embankment landscape, passing a castle and continuing through the old towns of Asperen and Heukelum.

Cycling routes and walking trails for planning your day

The Fietsen langs de Linge cycling route passes through Asperen, Heukelum and Arkel. Along the way, orchards, meadows and reed beds shape the landscape, complemented by views of the water and authentic dikes along the Linge. The Lingewaalroute starts in Asperen and leads through the municipality of West Betuwe, through Leerdam, Acquoy, Beesd and other small historic towns, as well as through a beautiful stretch of nature. A different perspective is offered by the Parels langs de Linge walk: it starts in Leerdam, follows the Linge towards the small fortified town of Asperen, passes Fort bij Asperen and continues through the picturesque village of Acquoy. The different starting points help you assess a holiday apartment in Asperen according to your preferred daily destinations and interests.
