Ermelo combines heathland, forest trails, history and a variety of destinations for days outdoors. In the forests and heathland areas of Ermelo, you can cycle, including mountain biking, and go horse riding.
Swimming at Veluwe aan Zee
You can swim at Veluwe aan Zee (Strand Horst). The water adds another specific activity to the heathland and forest landscapes. This means that, in addition to hiking, cycling, mountain biking and horse riding, swimming is also available as a separate focus when planning your day. Swimming at Strand Horst can therefore be planned as a separate section alongside hikes and cycling tours.
Heathland Trails and Routes for Active Days
The Ermelosche Heide is primarily used as a nature reserve and is available for recreational activities during the day. You can walk freely along wide sandy paths. There are also signposted hiking trails, including a circular route that starts at the sheep barn. The hiking route to the Roman marching camp is also signposted, is 6 kilometres long in total and can be shortened to 4 kilometres. For another walk, the hiking route to the north of Ermelo is a good option: it is approximately 5 kilometres long and runs through green areas in the northern part of Ermelo and past numerous points of interest. The route to the marching camp, which can be shortened, can therefore be adapted to a shorter or longer day of hiking. The circular route at the sheep barn provides a fixed starting point.
Staverden Estate and Castle Gardens
Staverden Estate also offers various opportunities for walking or cycling. All three cycling and hiking routes on the estate end in the castle gardens of Staverden. This destination remains the same for planning your day, regardless of the route you choose.
Oud Groevenbeek: Villa, Landscape and Architectural History
At Oud Groevenbeek Estate, a villa dating from 1908 and protected as a Rijksmonument is the focal point. You can walk and cycle there along the forests, flower meadows, grape greenhouses and dense thickets. Oud Groevenbeek also has an adapted path suitable for wheelchair users and visitors with visual impairments. The villa is the focal point, while the paths run along the various landscapes. The adapted path is also part of this estate.
Discover Art by Bicycle
The Art-Cycle Route combines cycling with public art. Its basic route is approximately 20 kilometres long and passes more than 50 public artworks. The approximate length of the basic route and the number of artworks provide a concrete framework for planning the day’s cycling tour. The artworks are located along the cycle route rather than at a single point.
Archaeology, Natural History and Wine
Museum Het Pakhuis focuses on archaeology and natural history. Visitors can view, touch and smell flint stones, shards and mammoth bones there. Telgt Winery offers guided tours, various excursions and wine tastings.
