Holiday apartment in Doetinchem between art, nature and history
Doetinchem combines outdoor art, historic buildings, nature-rich areas and the Oude IJssel. More than 100 artworks by Buitenkunst Doetinchem are spread throughout the outdoor space; these include art routes for cycling, walking, skating, boating or running. This brings together the city, landscape and different ways of exploring the surroundings.
Nature and routes
De Zumpe is part of the Gelders Natuurnetwerk. The calcareous groundwater there contributes to a distinctive flora. The Natuurpark De Koekendaal is also located in a natural setting; it is part of the De Wrange nature area and is easily accessible for pushchairs, wheelchairs and walking frames. Natuurpark Overstegen is a nature-rich recreational area with ponds, pools, walking paths and flower-rich meadows.
Several routes run through the Kruisbergse Bossen, through woodland, along sandy paths and across open landscapes. Landgoed Slangenburg is accessible to walkers and cyclists. The programme “Doetinchem door andere ogen” also offers a narrative way to explore the area, with three cycling routes and three walking routes leading to various locations mentioned in the stories. The “Oude Stadt Doetinchem” route runs along the Oude IJssel and reaches the edge of the Kruisbergse Bossen.
Culture and history
The history of the Catharinakerk dates back to the Middle Ages. Today, the church is used for services, concerts and cultural events. The late-Gothic Driekoningenkapel, dating from the 15th century, is one of Doetinchem’s oldest buildings. Another historic building is the Walmolen, a grain mill built in 1851 on a preserved section of Doetinchem’s old city wall. After it was decommissioned, it was preserved and restored.
Kasteel Slangenburg preserves original painted ceilings and paintings by Gerard Hoet and can be visited as part of guided tours. Kasteel De Kelder is designated as a Rijksmonument and is also known as Havezate Hagen; it dates from the 16th century. The Auroramolen is a historic grain mill dating from 1870 and is still used to mill grain.
The Stadsmuseum Doetinchem presents the history of Doetinchem and its surroundings. It is located in Het Oude Postkantoor in Doetinchem. Throughout the year, it hosts changing exhibitions featuring objects or paintings by local artists or artists from the Achterhoek.
Exploring together
The Stadsboerin Doetinchem programme includes an accessible one-hour group walk through the Kruisbergse Bossen every Sunday morning. Afterwards, a shared healthy breakfast and hot herbal tea are offered. The programme therefore includes both independent routes and a regular group activity for exploring the outdoors.
