It Eilân is a 230-hectare area on the edge of De Alde Feanen National Park. It consists of the two islands of It Eilân East and It Eilân West. The area’s size and division into two islands give it a clearly defined character within the landscape of Goëngahuizen.

Mill history spanning different periods

The Roekmole was moved to an island near Goëngahuizen in 2009. The oldest parts are said to date from 1798 and to have been made from Dutch oak. De Modderige Bol also represents a distinct chapter in the local history of mills. Parts of the lower tower were made from oak felled around 1736. Until 1952, De Modderige Bol drained the approximately 55-hectare Adamse polder. The mill thus stands for both historic timber construction and the former drainage of a polder.

According to current knowledge, the Jansmole is the oldest surviving mill in Fryslân. It also turns very regularly. Its age and regular rotation are two separate features within the mill history of Goëngahuizen.

At the site of the Heechhiem, the oldest known mention of a mill dates back to 1820. Shortly before the turn of the year 2024/25, Heechhiem was once again capable of milling. The timeline therefore extends from the oldest known mention to this specific condition before the turn of the year 2024/25.

Dorpenroute: Rest area for cycling tours

There is a rest area with a toilet in Goëngahuizen along the Dorpenroute. For cyclists, this is a specific landmark to include in route planning. In addition to the island area and the mills, a cycling tour with a fixed break can therefore also be planned near Goëngahuizen.
