The Langs Donkerbroek cycling route passes through the hamlet of Bovenveld to Haule, whose nature area lies on both sides of the road. At the same time, trails, artworks and historic sites offer different ways to explore the village, allowing you to divide your time between activity, landscape and discovery.

The Blauwe Bos lies between Haulerwijk, Haule and Waskemeer. The area provides shelter for animals such as deer, shorebirds and amphibians. At the end of the Veenpettenweg, there is also a unique grazing area where Natuurmonumenten is working to restore nature so that meadow birds can breed there again. These two landscapes give your stay a clear connection with nature, without requiring you to commit to just one way of exploring.

For walks in Haule, a trail leads from the car park at the skating rink on Dorpsstraat over the skating rink’s dyke and through a small wood behind it with a pingo pond, heading towards the Blauwe Bos. Haule is also located on the Southeast Friesland hiking node network and on the approximately 350-kilometre long-distance trail “Groot Frieslandpad” (LAW 14). For one route, the start and finish are on the Veenpettenweg cycle path near the De Mande village hall; free parking is available there.

The second Hein Mader art route is 55 kilometres long, is a recreational themed route and is designed as a circuit with its start and finish in the same place. Church, Memorial and Artwork

Haule’s Dorpskerk dates from 1854 and is a municipal monument. The present Protestant church was inaugurated on 18 November 1855. The oldest grave in the churchyard belongs to Trijntje Hendriks Beetsma. At the site of the former Hervormde chapel, a sign and a bench commemorate the former building.

Haule’s war memorial is a natural-stone commemorative monument with two bronze plaques. It commemorates five residents of Haule and one Allied pilot who were killed in acts of war during the Second World War or the colonial war in Indonesia, in the former Dutch East Indies. On 4 May 2017, the name Markus Assies was added to the memorial monument. The artwork “Beeld Hein Mader Haule” also stands on the village road running through Haule: a stone is wedged between two steel halves.

Village Life and Places to Visit in the Surrounding Area

Haule’s village festival takes place once every five years. It includes a procession and a celebration in the festival tent. Nearby, the Haulewelle outdoor swimming pool in Haulerwijk opened for the new swimming season on 18 April 2026. Around Haule, the range of experiences thus extends from quiet trails and protected landscapes to community events and seasonal swimming facilities.
