Menaldum bears the Frisian place name Menaam. The village combines an old settlement site with buildings associated with the church, remembrance, agriculture, and water engineering. The Menaldumervaart and cultural-historical cycling routes also extend the village’s history into the former municipality of Menaldumadeel. The highlights range from individual addresses to routes through several villages.

Churches, Memorials, and Agriculture in Menaam

The Protestant Church at Skilpaed 2 in Menaam is designated as a Rijksmonument under monument number 28569. The Menaam resistance memorial stands at the corner of Rijksstraatweg/Mieddyk. The church reflects sacred architectural history, while the memorial is dedicated to commemorating the resistance.

De Aardappelbeurs stands on Lytsedyk in Menaam. It is a distinctive former café building associated with the former potato auction. The auction took place at the quay in front of the café. De Aardappelbeurs was built around 1857–1858. The residents of Menaam worked in agriculture, particularly potato cultivation. The building and the former auction site therefore connect architectural history with potato cultivation.

The Lambertuskerk has the largest still-original village church organ in Fryslân. Willem Hardoff built it in 1861. The De Kievit polder mill provides a different technical highlight. It was built in 1802 for the drainage and irrigation of the 265-hectare Berlikumerpolder. Together, the two buildings connect the village’s history with music and water management.

Menaam Between Terp and Waterway

Menaam is a terp village that arose several centuries before the beginning of our era on the salt-marsh ridge between Dronryp and Bitgum. The Menaldumervaart is navigable from the Van Harinxmakanaal.

Cycling Routes and Paths with Historical Connections

The cultural-historical cycling route through the former municipality of Menaldumadeel runs via Marsum, Ingelum, Bitgum, Berltsum, Wier, Slappeterp, Menaam, Dronrijp, and Ritsumasyl. Along this long sequence of villages, Menaam appears together with several other stops in the former municipality. For a cycling tour, this provides a sequence of villages connecting Menaam with several other villages in the historic municipal area.

The Berltsum–Menaam–Kleaster Anjum route leads to Menaam. Via Gernierswei and Kleasterdyk, it reaches the former Mariënberg monastery grounds. This route therefore connects Menaam, two roads, and former monastery grounds in a historical route. The two routes differ in terms of planning: one route lists many villages in the former municipality, while the other follows Gernierswei and Kleasterdyk to the former Mariënberg monastery grounds. Those wishing to explore Menaam by bicycle can choose between the sequence of villages through Menaldumadeel and the section via these two roads.

Menaam is accessible by public transport. This means that the journey can be planned independently of a cycling tour. Public transport thus provides a second travel option alongside the cycling tour.
