Holiday apartment in De Friese Meren: lakes, ferries and Frisian culture
De Friese Meren combines waterways, cycling routes and important cultural sites. The Langweerder Wielen are suitable for both sailing yachts and motor yachts. The Friese-Zuiderzee cycling route runs largely along the IJsselmeer and leads through the inland area of Southwest Friesland. In Lemmer, the Woudagemaal is a UNESCO World Heritage Site; at the same time, it is the largest still-functioning steam pumping station in the world.
Water and routes
The beach at the Langweerder Wielen offers swimming opportunities and play equipment for children. The circular cycling route around the Langweerder Wielen is 12 kilometres long and crosses a ferry twice. Several ferry connections are also available for different ways of getting around: the Langwarder Feart ferry in Langweer at Pontdyk is suitable for cars, cyclists and pedestrians. In Brekkenpolder, a ferry for cyclists and pedestrians crosses the Riensleat.
The signposted recreational cycling route “Vlecke, dorp en stad” runs around and along the Friese Meren and includes a ferry crossing. The “Fyts, kuier en vaarroute” combines cycling, walking and canoeing. At Mirnser Klif, you can swim or surf in the IJsselmeer. The “Kliffenroute van Gaasterland” is a cycling route more than 29 kilometres long. The Slotermeer lies north of Sloten and can be reached from the town centre via the Slotergat.
Culture and history
At Museum Joure, various workshops and production sites are brought together: the interactive museum includes Douwe Egberts’ first factory, a historic metal factory, an authentic print shop and a Frisian clockmaker’s workshop. Museum Joure also offers a coffee tasting.
The Langweerder Molen has stood in Langweer since 1782 on the border between Langweer and the neighbouring village of Boornzwaag. The present-day church with its tower in Langweer was built in 1777. The bell tower of Legemeer dates from 1720. After it was destroyed by an autumn storm in 1972, it was rebuilt in the same style. In Sint Nicolaasga stands the Nicolaaskerk, a Neo-Gothic cruciform basilica dating from 1887.
Sloten combines several historic sites. Museum Sloten tells the town’s history in a special way using magic lantern projectors. It is located in the town’s former town hall, which was built between 1759 and 1761. The Protestant Late Gothic church in Sloten was built in 1647 on the site of the former Sint-Janskapel. A walking tour through Sloten passes historic buildings, the mill and the fountain, providing insight into the town’s history.
The Korenmolen De Kaai is also one of the defining landmarks in Sloten. It has been grinding grain into flour since 1775, is open for visits on Saturdays and sells flour. During “Kanongebulder Sloten”, the town’s shooters’ guild fires the cannon at the mill grounds of the Korenmolen De Kaai every Friday evening during the main season.
Nature and landscape
The Iepenarboretum in Joure is considered the largest elm garden in Europe. Doniaga Beach has a sunbathing lawn and three fishing jetties. In the Vegelinbossen, you can walk, cycle and ride horses.
The six-metre-high Oudemirdumerklif is a remnant of a glacial lobe from the Saalian Ice Age. More than 200 plant species grow at Oudemirdumerklif. This makes the site a focus both for its geological origins and for its present-day plant life.
