Klaarkamp Monastery was built around 1165 on a raised dwelling mound in the flat salt-marsh landscape. The complex included a monastery church, a cloister courtyard, living and sleeping quarters, kitchens and the abbot’s accommodation. Today, the site includes the remains of a Cistercian monastery as well as the remains of a dwelling mound dating from the late Iron Age or the Roman period.

This makes it possible to explore several historical layers in one place: the medieval monastery complex and a much older history of settlement.
