Augustinusga between history and short distances

Augustinusga offers many tangible starting points for a trip combining culture, activity and regional discoveries. When choosing your holiday apartment in Augustinusga, you can use the historic buildings, the described routes and the village’s special places as points of reference. East of Augustinusga stands the Boktjasker, one of only two examples of this type in Friesland. The historic Noordoost cycle route also passes through Augustinusga and is approximately 32 km long.

Church and historic buildings

The Sint-Augustinuskerk is at the heart of the village’s history. The brick hall church, closed at a right angle, was built in the mid-15th century behind an older tower on a raised churchyard; the tower itself dates from the 13th century. The historic interior includes a pulpit with corner pillars and coats of arms on the front panel, a lords’ pew with heraldic panels, tombstones of prominent families and an organ dating from 1883.

Other buildings add to this picture: De Woudenhof was built in 1915 in the interwar architectural style as a residence and notary’s office, commissioned by the notary Harterink and designed by the architect H. A. Pothoven from Amersfoort. The villa at Geawei 1 was built in 1850 and served as the office and residence of the notary Landmeter. The small farmhouse at Legeloane 6 is a Kop-Romp type farm from the second half of the 18th century.

Craft and technical history are also present in Augustinusga. The Timmerschuur at Geawei 20 was set up as a wheelwright’s and cooper’s workshop. The Tjasker at It Oast 1b is a former Boktjasker-type polder mill. At Abrahamsplein, a monument incorporates a former gable stone bearing the coat of arms of Achtkarspelen, which depicts a church with eight church towers. A war memorial was unveiled at Brêgeloane/Izermieden in 1956. There is also a monument commemorating the politician and painter Willem Bartel van der Kooi, who lived in Augustinusga 250 years ago.

Plan walks and cycle rides

For a manageable walk, hiking route 37 Reaskuorre–Blauforleat is 4 km long, takes about an hour and runs entirely along paved paths. It begins at junction 56 in Roodeschuur, passes through Augustinusga and ends at junction 95 in Blauwverlaat. The Noordoost route, by contrast, is designed as a circuit; the starting point can be chosen freely. The different lengths and route formats help you plan active holiday days to suit your own rhythm.

Blauwverlaat and De Waterjuffer

Blauwverlaat is a hamlet belonging to Augustinusga and has a harbour on the Prinses-Margriet Canal. Another place for local impressions is Vijvertuin De Waterjuffer, an open garden with a tea and coffee room, bed and breakfast and gallery.

When choosing your holiday apartment, you can therefore focus on different aspects: short paved paths, a longer historic cycle circuit, sacred architecture and interior art, or individual examples of agriculture, crafts and regional remembrance. This means Augustinusga cannot be reduced to just one travel idea.
