Beilen can be discovered in several ways: through the Stefanuskerk, the Dorpsommetje Beilen, the landscape of Terhorsterzand and events such as Bourgondisch Beilen. If you are planning a stay in a holiday apartment in Beilen, you can decide in advance whether culture, walks, nature, family activities or regional cuisine should be the main focus.

Church, Exhibition and Art

Since 1980, the Oudheidkamer Beilen has had its own exhibition space in a building on Kampstraat. The Molen van Makkum is a grain mill built in 1906 as the successor to a blown-over post mill.

The Stefanuskerk in Beilen is a monumental Gothic church from the 14th and 15th centuries and one of six Dingspilkerken in Drenthe. During the major fire of 1820, it was the only building to survive the fire.

The Fontein is a work of art symbolising how the water from the adjacent Beilervaart is channelled inwards.

Walking Trails and Nature

The Dorpsommetje Beilen is a short, 3.5-kilometre circular route through Beilen. The route starts at the Stefanuskerk; the starting point can be reached on foot from Beilen railway station in 10 minutes. For a compact walk, this combination of a circular route and an easily accessible starting point is a clear planning factor.

The Rondje Schapendrift is easily walkable for people with reduced mobility and leads along the nature trail and the Schapendrift. The fruit trees bloom from around mid-April; from approximately mid-May, various wildflowers bloom along the nature trail. You can use these approximate timings to plan the walk according to the landscape impression you want.

Terhorsterzand lies south of Beilen, a nature area with 60 hectares of woodland and 120 hectares of heathland and fenland. It has a shallow bathing pond with a sandy beach; the water is no more than one metre deep. Several sandy paths cross the area, which borders the Dwingelderveld nature area, making longer hikes possible.

The Beleefpark has a disc golf course, several fruit trees, various interactive features for children, as well as picnic tables and benches. The combination of play, activities and seating creates a different emphasis than a purely walking trail.

Choosing a Holiday Apartment in Beilen Based on Your Travel Plans

Bourgondisch Beilen is an annual festival in Beilen. Local and regional food establishments serve culinary creations to the public as part of a competition; admission is free. For travellers who want to experience regional cuisine, the festival can be a programme item in its own right.

The Boerderijen Fietspuzzeltocht is a cycling route of approximately 38 kilometres held annually on the second day of Pentecost. It complements the short walking trails with a longer cycling option.

When choosing a holiday apartment in Beilen, you can use your preferred daily rhythm as a guide: a short local circular walk, a seasonal walk, a nature area, children's activities, culture, gastronomy or a cycling route represent different travel ideas. This keeps your accommodation choice aligned with your own plans.
