Nieuw-Amsterdam combines a distinctive Van Gogh history with waterways, cycling and hiking opportunities, as well as special sporting experiences. Vincent van Gogh stayed at the Logement Scholte in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord from 2 October to 4 December 1883. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Nieuw-Amsterdam can therefore combine cultural discoveries and active days when choosing their destination.
Van Gogh and the history of the canals
In Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord, two Van Gogh murals with an area of 250 m² are located at the railway station on a former grain silo. On one side, they depict Vincent van Gogh’s famous watercolour „De ophaalbrug“, and on the other side, a portrait of Drenthe by Vincent. The two motifs are distributed across both sides of the former grain silo at the local railway station. Culture enthusiasts will therefore find a tangible connection between the artist and the place here.
La Paix was the Compagniehaus of the Drentsche Landontginning Maatschappij. The waterways are also part of the history of Nieuw-Amsterdam and Veenoord: the Verlengde Hoogeveensche Vaart and the Zijtak from the Stieltjeskanaal attracted a great deal of peat industry to both places.
Railway station, water and cycling routes
Nieuw-Amsterdam railway station is still in operation on the Zwolle–Emmen railway line. The line connects the town of Nieuw-Amsterdam with Zwolle and Emmen.
For a trip on the water, the historic Trekschuit „Johannes Veldkamp“ can be rented for a full or half day. The rental period allows for either a short half-day tour or a longer full day on the water. Cyclists also have a clear starting point: Two of the three cycling routes of Van Gogh Huis Drenthe begin in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord. The rental period of the Trekschuit provides its own timeframe; by contrast, two of the three cycling routes of Van Gogh Huis Drenthe begin here in Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord.
The „Stay in primeval landscape“ hiking route is marked in the landscape with brown-and-white signs. Along this route, additional information is provided on information boards. Exercise and interesting facts therefore accompany the route together and give the walk a recognisable thematic framework. Brown-and-white signs mark the route; information boards complement it for the walk through the local landscape.
Sporting experiences in different seasons
At Sportpark Veenoord, Ijsvereniging Nieuw-Amsterdam/Veenoord has had a 400-metre ice rink and a skating track for the youngest skaters since the 2023/2024 season. In Veenoord, there is also a race track at the main football field of the Twedo sports club, which is used for speedway races. Regional, national and international races have been held there since 1954. The ice rink is located at Sportpark Veenoord; the speedway track is situated at the main football field of the Twedo sports club.
Over the years, thousands of trees have been planted in the area between Vaartweg, Zijtak and Zwarteweg and along the Dommerskanaal.
