Ungheni brings together culture, green spaces and the Prut River in a varied cityscape: the museum spans everything from archaeological collections to contemporary art, while churches and an open-air exhibition add further cultural highlights. There is also a large park, a long chestnut avenue, Piața Independenței square and the city beach. For a family trip, this offers a range of interests to guide your days of discovery and your choice of holiday rental.

Museum and Outdoor Sculptures

The Ungheni Museum of History and Ethnography has more than 10,000 exhibits. Its collections include archaeological material from antiquity and the Middle Ages; the museum also hosts changing exhibitions of contemporary art. This brings together different periods and art forms under one roof. The open-air exhibition of modern sculptures adds another dimension: located in the city’s central park, it features around 80 works created during seven international summer sculpture workshops. The contrast is appealing: collections and changing exhibitions take centre stage here, while modern sculpture is displayed outdoors there.

Churches and Architectural History

The Church of “Sf. Alexandru Nevski” is listed in the national register of monuments of the Republic of Moldova. Its distinctive architectural style is associated with architect Alexandru Bernardazzi. The Orthodox Church of “Sf. Ierarh Nicolae”, the city’s oldest place of worship, offers a different perspective on Ungheni’s history. Its memorial significance is linked to its founder, the Greek-born Prince Constantin Moruzi. Moruzi and his nephew Pavel are buried in the church’s crypt. Those interested in architecture will find two distinct points of reference: a distinctive style associated with Bernardazzi, and a memorial site whose history is tied to a particular founding family.

The railway bridge over the Prut near Ungheni is also attributed to Gustave Eiffel as its designer and builder, although no official document supports this attribution. The bridge thus combines a well-known attribution with an important qualification that should be kept in mind when considering its history.

Squares and Urban Green Spaces

Piața Independenței has undergone a transformation: originally used for administrative purposes, the square dates back to 1952 and was converted into a pedestrian zone in 2022. A pedestrian fountain in the square puts on light and music shows. If you would like to plan your visit around a performance, check the specific dates, as schedules may vary.

Ungheni’s green spaces take different forms. Micul Cluj Park is a ten-hectare green recreational area. The city’s chestnut avenue was established in 1975, is more than three kilometres long and has over 650 trees. In contrast, the park offers an expansive green space, while the avenue is defined by its long row of trees. These differences can help you decide whether to prioritise a park as a destination or a distinctive tree-lined avenue as part of the cityscape.

The Prut and Special Events

The city beach lies on the Prut and consists of a strip of fine white sand approximately 250 metres long and 50 to 70 metres wide. Beach conditions may vary by season, so check what to expect for your travel dates before visiting. The “Cupa «Iacob Ciachir»” equestrian cup was held in Ungheni and is dedicated to the memory of Iacob Ciachir. If you would like to plan your trip around the event, check whether and when another edition is scheduled.

When choosing a holiday rental in Ungheni, you can start by considering what matters for your trip: museums and architectural history, urban greenery, the beach on the Prut or a special event. If you are planning with people who have different interests, these clearly distinct themes provide a good basis for choosing together.
