Lisets in the Šar Mountains: Mountain Village and Ski Center
Accommodation in Lisets
Lisets is a large mountain village in the Municipality of Tetovo, situated on the slopes of the Šar Mountains. The village is ten kilometers west of the city center, along the road to the Popova Šapka ski resort. The ski center is located within the village area. This means the mountains and skiing are central to finding your way around Lisets, while the village also has a history of its own.
Ski Resort and Seasons
The Popova Šapka ski resort has 35 km² of ski terrain and is suitable for all skiing disciplines. The area figure conveys the scale of the terrain, while its suitability for all disciplines reflects the breadth of skiing it offers. In the wider destination of Tetovo, the ski center has been operating since 1934 and is one of the oldest ski centers in the Balkans. This historical context adds a sense of its long history to the description of the ski resort.
In the wider destination of Tetovo, Popova Šapka serves as a starting point for hiking and cycling routes during the other months of the year. If you plan to make use of this option, check the current route conditions in advance.
An Early Written Mention
A document from around 1343, known as the “Htetovsko Brevno,” mentions Lisets for the first time in written sources. It lists properties belonging to the Church of “sv.Bogorodica Htetovska.” The entry provides an early historical reference point for the mountain village; the date is explicitly approximate.
Culture and Routes in the Wider Destination of Tetovo
In the wider destination of Tetovo, the old public hammam is a notable example of cultural heritage. Mehmet bej Çelebiu had it built near the Shkumbin River toward the end of the 15th century. For centuries, it served aristocratic merchants traveling along the Via Egnatia. It was first restored in 1968 and converted into an art gallery. A further restoration took place in 2006 as a joint project of the Ministry of Culture, the National Conservation Center, and the US Embassy in Skopje.
The Šarena Džamija, located in Tetovo near the Pena River, also offers a glimpse into the region’s history. The mosque was built in 1495 by the Ottoman sisters Hyrshide and Mensure Hatun and remodeled and redesigned in 1833 by Abdurrahman Pasha. The sisters’ tomb is beside the mosque. Tetovo is also home to the Arabati-Baba-Tekḱe, also known as Arabati Baba Teqe or Harabati Baba Tekkesi. It was originally established in 1538 around the türbe of the Albanian Bektashi dervish Sersem Ali Baba. A waqf endowed by Recep Paşa established the present-day complex in 1799.
The central section of the Šar Mountains covers most of the Municipality of Tetovo. At 2,747 meters, Titov Vrv is the municipality’s highest peak and also the highest peak in the Šar Mountains. Tetovo Bus Station is also a practical reference point for getting around the region: daily services run from there to Skopje, Gostivar, Kumanovo, and Ohrid, as well as international services to Albania, Kosovo, and other neighboring countries. Check current routes and timetables before you travel.
