The Crn Drim leaves Lake Ohrid at Struga and flows through the town. The river and the lake give the place a distinct landscape; at the same time, poetry, art and history shape its cultural identity. A leisurely walk through the town centre can take in Poetry Bridge, Poetry Park, the central park, the old bazaar district and the Miladin Brothers Memorial House. Visitors can also walk along the banks of the Crn Drim. This brings together two different sides of Struga: a town walk with several stops and the riverbanks.

Poetry by the River and in the Town

The Struga Poetry Evenings take place in the third week of August. At the events, poets recite poems to the audience from the bridge where the Crn Drim flows out of Lake Ohrid. This gives poetry in Struga a tangible connection to the river landscape. If you are planning your trip specifically around the Poetry Evenings, check the event dates and programme for your travel period.

The awards also bring the literary tradition to life. Since 1971, the Golden Wreath has been awarded for a poet’s complete body of work. The Brakja-Miladinovci Award recognises the best book by a contemporary Macedonian poet; it was established in 1963. Their purposes are clearly distinct: one honours a lifetime’s work, the other a book. This contrast adds two different forms of literary recognition to the picture of the Struga Poetry Evenings.

The House of Poetry, built in 1966, includes a library with books by festival participants. A permanent exhibition at the House of the Miladinov Brothers is dedicated to the poets’ lives and work. The Vangel Kodzoman Gallery’s permanent exhibition, “Struga in the past,” features numerous works by the painter. The cultural themes thus range from the festival and its participants to poets’ biographies and painting.

Museums, Collections and Older Architectural History

Since 1961, the public museum in Struga has had a history and archaeology department, where archaeological finds from the region are kept. The museum organises thematic exhibitions in various fields, including art exhibitions in its gallery. The collection of the Natural Science Museum includes numerous birds, fish, insects and other fauna from the Struga, Ohrid and Prespa regions. The focus therefore ranges from the region’s archaeological traces to the wildlife of several landscape areas.

The small Church of St George in the centre also brings together several periods: it was built in 1835 over a much older church dating from the 16th century. This building offers a tangible glimpse of the sequence of the town’s history.

When looking for a holiday apartment in Struga, this offers a starting point for deciding what matters most: should your stay focus primarily on the cultural programme, the collections and a town walk, or would you prefer to make the river and the lake the main focus of your landscape experience? Struga and the western shore of Lake Ohrid can be seen from the water. Visitors can walk along the banks of the Crn Drim, while the leisurely town-centre walk connects several named cultural and park stops.
