Stenje brings the shores of Lake Prespa together with traces from several eras. The surrounding area is home to Neolithic and Late Antique settlement sites, a Roman settlement and burial site, and a medieval fortress, as well as the Church of Sv. Atanas. The former beach in the village has been restored and a promenade built. This gives the area a clear profile for choosing a holiday apartment: if you would like to combine the lakeshore with history, Stenje offers both. Plan visits to historic sites individually and check access arrangements in advance.

Lakeshore and an outing on the lake

During an earlier restoration, new sand was added to Stenje’s former beach, along with modular facilities on the shore and in the lake. A new promenade was built as part of the same restoration. This describes a change made in the past; check current access arrangements before planning a beach visit. Another activity is a commercial Prespa excursion that includes an easy hike along the shores of Lake Prespa in the village of Stenje. Ask the provider whether the tour is currently available.

Traces from different eras

Near the village is Kula, a medieval fortress on a high hill with a flattened plateau. It lies about 1 km southwest of the Tsarina holiday resort. Lozjata is a Neolithic settlement among the village vineyards, about 2 km west of the village. Ceramic fragments and numerous stone and flint tools have been observed there. The two sites represent different historical periods: a medieval fortress and a Neolithic settlement.

On the lakeshore, about 500 m southeast of the village, is Pevchinja (Gradište–Varpici), a Roman-era settlement and necropolis. Building foundations and graves made from large stone slabs were discovered there during sand extraction. Chetkarica, a Late Antique settlement about 1.5 km northwest of the village, adds finds from the fields to this picture: ceramic fragments, pithoi, roof tiles, and other building materials. The sites therefore differ both in date and in the kinds of evidence preserved.

The Church of Sv. Atanas, described as early Christian, was built in the 18th century. It stands about 1 km south of the village on the road to Konjsko. For travellers interested in historic buildings and archaeological sites, the church adds a different dimension to the settlements. Together, the place names and the different eras invite you to explore the area not only through its history along the shore, but also through its layered past.

Landscape within the wider destination of Resen

The municipality of Resen lies in the Prespa Basin. To the east, it is bounded by the Baba Mountains, including Pelister at 2,600 m; to the west, by Galičica at 2,235 m. The basin lies between Pelister and Galičica National Parks and contains both Little and Great Lake Prespa. This landscape provides the regional setting for a stay where the lake and mountains reveal different sides of the region.

Ezerani Nature Park lies in the northern part of Lake Prespa within the municipality of Resen. It covers 1,917 ha, of which 1,066 ha are land and 851 ha water. Golem Grad is a legally protected natural feature in Great Lake Prespa and lies within Galičica National Park. The island covers 1 km²; its features include dense woodland dominated by the endemic Foet, as well as the preserved Cave Church of St. Peter. Thus, the wider destination of Resen brings together landscapes, protected areas, and cultural heritage, while Stenje offers its own distinctive focus on the history of the shore and nearby archaeological sites.
