If you are considering Krani as a holiday destination, you can also explore the landscape and culture of the wider Resen destination. Here, the Small and Great Prespa Lakes meet striking mountain ranges and a rich history. This lets you plan around the topics that interest you most: natural landscapes and protected areas, or historic buildings and collections.

Lake landscapes and mountain scenery

The Municipality of Resen lies in the Prespa Basin. It is bounded to the east by the Baba Mountain range, with 2,600-metre-high Pelister, and to the west by Galičica, at 2,235 metres. The Small and Great Prespa Lakes lie between Pelister and Galičica National Parks. These geographical features give the destination a clear landscape setting: lakes, mountains and national parks all shape the region.

The Ezerani Nature Park lies within the Municipality of Resen, on the northern part of Lake Prespa. It covers a total area of 1,917 hectares, of which 1,066 hectares are land and 851 hectares are water. This breakdown shows that the nature park includes both land and water areas. For your holiday planning, it offers a different landscape focus from the mountain boundaries of the Prespa Basin.

Another natural highlight is Golem Grad in the Great Prespa Lake. This legally protected island lies in Galičica National Park and covers one square kilometre. It is noted for its dense forest vegetation, the predominance of the endemic Föte, and the preserved cave church of St. Peter. The island also preserves the churches of St. Peter and St. Dimitrija, as well as an early Christian basilica with remnants of a floor mosaic. Here, nature and architectural heritage are both in focus.

Buildings and history in Resen

Architecture also offers different ways to explore the past. Resen Saray was built by Nijazi Beg in the 19th century and is now the most representative building in Resen. The Haji Ramadan Mosque in Resen dates from 1592 and was built by Haji Ramadan, a bey from Bitola. Following several restorations, it retains its so-called Opus cloisonné form. Together, the buildings represent different chapters in the region’s architectural history.

The Church of St. George in Kurbinovo was built in 1191. Its frescoes depict the Archangel Gabriel, Saint Anne, the Virgin Mary, and Saints Cyril and Methodius. In Brajčino, the frescoes in the Church of St. Petka were created in two phases: in the 16th and 18th centuries. The small, single-nave church has a three-sided apse. Anyone interested in religious architecture can explore specific differences in the buildings’ dates and design.

The churches in Pretor and Slivnica reveal further layers of history. St. Sava in Pretor dates from the 14th century, was a metochion of Slivnica Monastery, and stands on the foundations of an older church dedicated to Saint Nicholas. The small, single-nave Church of St. Petka in Slivnica has an established place of worship; remnants of an earlier necropolis are also visible. The inscription at the Monastery of the Holy Mother of God in Slivnica gives 1607 as the year it was built. A wooden bell tower and an enclosed porch were added in the 19th century.

Collections as a focus of their own

If you prefer exploring objects and memories to buildings, the wider Resen destination also offers a variety of themes. The Ethnological Museum in Podmočani is a private collection of archaeological objects housed in the home of Jone Eftimovski. It includes more than 2,000 works of art and over 160 different Macedonian national costumes from all of Macedonia’s ethnological regions.

The Tatarchev Memorial House in Resen tells the story of the Tatarchev family. Its collection includes eight wax figures, original objects from the 19th and 20th centuries, and visual artworks; the memorial covers 280 square metres. Comparing the costume and art collection in Podmočani with the family history in Resen can help you choose a personal focus for exploring the region.

When looking for a holiday rental in Krani, these topics can help guide you: would you like to connect your stay more with lakes and mountain scenery, or with buildings, frescoes and collections? Your answer can help you tailor your holiday plans to your own interests.
