Vratnitsa at the foot of the Shar Mountains
Accommodation in Vratnitsa
Vratnitsa between plain and mountains
Vratnitsa lies in the upper part of the Polog Plain, at the foot of the northern Shar Mountains and below the summit of Ljuboten. The village is situated at an elevation of 700 to 760 metres above sea level. The plain and the mountains give the landscape two clearly defined points of reference; they are complemented by the artificial Vratničko Ezero, a large canyon, and traces of history and language. This combination can help you decide which type of holiday best suits your search for accommodation: nature and water, or culture and history.
Vratničko Ezero and its surroundings
Vratničko Ezero, also known as Golina, lies in the flatter part of the wider area around Vratnica. The artificial reservoir was created in the Golina area in the 1960s. It is used to irrigate vineyards and mainly for sport and recreation, especially fishing. It has a capacity of 410,000 cubic metres. The body of water is thus shaped by two distinct uses: agriculture and leisure. Vratnitsa itself lies in the upper part of the plain, while Ezero is located in the flatter part of the wider village area. If you are planning to fish or take part in other recreational activities, check current access in advance.
River landscape and nearby picnic spot
The Vratnička Reka flows past Vratnica and forms a large canyon there, one of the village’s natural attractions. Unlike the artificial reservoir, the canyon is a natural feature associated with Vratnica. The Senokos picnic spot lies near Vratnica at the foot of the Shar Mountains and is part of the surrounding area, not the village itself.
History and language
Vratnica was first mentioned in an Ottoman defter dating from the 15th century. A defter was a tax and land register. This first mention provides a written historical reference point, but is not automatically the village’s founding date. Crkvište, also known as the old Sv. Konstantin i Elena, is an archaeological site containing parts of a medieval church. The Church of Sv. Konstantin i Elena in the village of Vratnica is now a ruin. The Vratnica dialect belongs to the western subgroup of the northern dialect group of Macedonian. This classification has several levels: it places the dialect within Macedonian through two subgroups. For travellers interested in local language, this precise classification offers a specific cultural point of reference. The written mention, archaeological remains, church ruin and dialect offer different ways of exploring the village’s history and culture.
For geographical orientation, the natural features can be compared: Ezero lies in the flatter part of the wider area, the canyon is part of the river landscape by the village, and the Senokos picnic spot is near Vratnica at the foot of the mountains. This makes it easy to distinguish the different landscape features when planning a trip.
