Trebishte: Lokuv Lake, Forest and Mountain Nature
Accommodation in Trebishte
Lokuv Lake gives the area around Trebishte an unusual natural feature: the national park website describes it as Macedonia’s lowest glacial lake and a tourist attraction. Water, forested trails and views of the mountain landscape offer different ways to spend your time—from a relaxing day by the lake to a hike.
Lokuv Lake: Swimming, Nature and Picnics
In summer, the water of Lokuv Lake is described as quite warm, and visitors can swim there in a rare mountain bathing area. This seasonal option offers a different experience from hiking through the forest. If you are visiting the lake mainly to swim, plan your visit for summer and check the current conditions locally.
There are opportunities for picnicking, camping and relaxing in the mountains around the lake. If you are planning to stay overnight while camping, check the park rules beforehand. Wildlife is also part of the experience: several forms of life inhabit the lake. The best-known is called “Tritonot,” an amphibian that resembles a fish and a frog.
Hiking Trails and Wide-Open Views
The hiking route to Lokuv Lake is considered moderately difficult and runs almost entirely through shady forest. This gives the outing a distinct character: the trail is mostly forested, while the lake offers water and a place to relax in the mountains. Viewpoints along a hiking route also offer views of the Radika River Canyon, the Monastery of Saint Jovan Bigorski and other landscapes.
If you like to vary your days, you can treat time by the lake and hiking as separate options: at Lokuv Lake, you can swim, picnic or make use of camping opportunities in the surrounding area; the route offers a moderately difficult trail through shady sections. This lets you decide when planning whether you would rather spend time by the water or experience the landscape on foot.
More to Discover in Mavrovo and Rostuša
The wider destination of Mavrovo and Rostuša also offers its own natural and cultural attractions. In Galichnik, the Galichnik Wedding Festival takes place every year on St. Peter’s Day (Petrovden), July 12; the Art Colony is held annually in August. If you would like to plan your trip around one of these dates, check the latest announcements in advance.
St. Nicholas Church in Mavrovo has a remarkable history: it was built in 1857 on the then-existing field of Mavrovo and was flooded in 1957 during the construction of the Mavrovo hydropower facilities. The submerged church becomes visible only rarely, when the lake level falls. The Duf Waterfalls lie at the end of the Duf Gorge and are about 25 metres high. A marked, easy-to-walk path leads there from the centre of Rostuše in about 30 minutes. The path is steep in several places; a wooden railing protects these sections.
For another nature outing, organised groups can visit Sharkova Dupka Cave. An illuminated metal staircase leads to its first underground hall; check current visiting arrangements before you go. A hiking trail starts at the ski centre in Mavrovo and ends at the Chavkarnik locality near the sheepfold.
