Kratovo lies in the crater of an extinct volcano. Medieval towers rise above houses with red-tiled roofs, alongside distinctive stone bridges and a landscape of deep river valleys and steep slopes. The town’s architectural history and geological features offer different focuses for your trip.

Landscape and Archaeological Sites

Numerous small rivers and streams run through the Kratovo area, lending the landscape a special beauty. Petrified trees have been found in the Kuklica geological reserve. Kuklica Kratovo is also included on North Macedonia’s list of protected areas. Natural features and protected-area status are therefore among the region’s defining themes.

Cocev Kamen is located in the rural area of the village of Shopsko Rudare. Its significance is both geological and anthropogenic: settlement and archaeological finds from the Neolithic and Late Antiquity give the site a historical context. Two larger depressions in the rock resemble vaulted rock shelters. They are approximately 8–10 metres long, 3–4 metres wide and 4–6 metres high. These approximate measurements give a sense of their shape, while the site’s archaeological significance offers another perspective on the area.

Golemo Gradiste near Konjuh also draws attention to early urban history. The archaeological site is considered a rare example of a town built at the end of the 5th or beginning of the 6th century AD. Exploring Kratovo and its region according to your interests lets you consider geological features and archaeological periods as distinct themes.

Towers, Churches and Stone Bridges

Kratovo’s surviving towers date from before Ottoman rule. At 21.80 metres, the Simićeva Tower is the tallest in the city. Its height can be readily compared with that of the other towers rising above the houses with red-tiled roofs. The historic townscape thus combines a specific architectural feature with a striking silhouette.

The Church of John the Baptist, also known as Sveti Jovan Preteča, is Kratovo’s main church and cathedral. It belongs to the building tradition of the master builders’ group led by Andreja Damjanov. Among the bridges, Radin Bridge is another distinctive structure: it spans the Manceva River and is the only bridge in Kratovo built on towers. The church, towers and bridge offer different ways to explore the town’s architectural history, rather than focusing on just one building.

Museum, Folklore and Potato Specialities

The Kratovo City Museum includes exhibitions in the Clock Tower and the Simićeva Tower. The Simićeva Tower also houses a permanent exhibition on the Karposh Uprising of 1689. If you plan a museum visit, check visiting arrangements in advance. This lets you combine an interest in historic buildings with a look at the history presented in an exhibition.

The international folklore festival “Razigrano Kratovo” takes place annually in Kratovo on 10 June; check the date before your trip. Kratovska Kompirijada adds a culinary touch: potato specialities are displayed in the town square, where visitors can sample them. Before your trip, check whether and when this event takes place. The two events thus differ both in theme and in how far ahead you can plan: an annual date is given for the festival, while you should check the timing of the potato event in advance.

Choose the Right Focus for Your Trip

When looking for a holiday apartment, you can first consider what you want your stay to focus on: Kratovo’s towers, bridges and church architecture; the geological features of Kuklica and Cocev Kamen; or a cultural or culinary event. These themes give your trip planning a clear direction without requiring you to fit everything into the same day. Those especially interested in architectural history will find several different examples, while visitors who want to focus on nature and archaeology can explore the landscapes and sites as separate interests.
