Discover Berovo: Museum, history and festivals
Accommodation in Berovo
Berovo tells its story through historic sites and recurring festivals: a reconstructed museum house offers a glimpse into the town's early history, while the main church and two annual celebrations provide further cultural points of interest. In the wider Berovo destination, there is also a lake, cycling and hiking trails, and monasteries. When looking for a holiday apartment, first consider whether you want to focus more on culture in town or on the regional attractions.
Museum and town history
The Berovo Museum is in the town centre, in a building reconstructed in the style of its original late-19th-century architecture. The building was the site of the town's first public school. The first NOO for Berovo was also formed there.
The historical exhibitions on the ground floor include documents and objects relating to the history of the people of Maleševo. Topics include Dedo Iljo Maleševski, Nikola Petrov Rusinski and Dimitar Pop Georgiev Berovski, the Razlovci Uprising, and the development of Maleševo between the two world wars and after the Second World War. Historical figures and an uprising are thus set alongside a view of contemporary history spanning several periods.
Church and recurring festivals
The Church of the Nativity of the Mother of God is Berovo's main church. Construction began in 1912; it was completed and consecrated in 1922. The bell tower was built in 1930. These dates give the church and tower their own place in the town's history.
The festival calendar also features recurring events. The Ethno Square Festival takes place every year on the last weekend of August in Dimitar Berovski Square. It includes the international fair of traditional products, “Maleshevia in the Palm”. Berovo also holds an annual Easter celebration in the square. The programme includes competitions for the most beautifully decorated and the most resilient Easter egg. If you are planning to travel specifically for a festival, check the date and programme for your travel year.
In the wider Berovo destination: lake, trails and monasteries
The artificial Berovo Lake lies at 986 metres above sea level and is considered a hydrological tourism site in Berovo Municipality. The lake offers opportunities for recreational fishing and has five hiking trails, some of which are also accessible by bicycle.
There are several cycling routes to choose from. The loop around the weekend settlement at Berovo Lake is 17 kilometres long and combines forest tracks, roads through the settlement and cycling along the lakeshore. The Great Berovo Loop is 48 kilometres long and connects the municipalities of Berovo and Pehchevo. Another route runs from Ablanica along a forest track directly to the lakeshore and is considered suitable for family outings. As trail conditions can change, it is worth checking the latest conditions before setting out on a particular ride.
The monasteries also offer a range of cultural interests. The Monastery of the Holy Archangel Michael was built between 1815 and 1818. Its frescoes are painted in a style that departs from strict Byzantine rules; the sisterhood makes Byzantine-style icons by hand. Male monastic life was revived at the Monastery of the Dormition of the Mother of God in 2002. It is open to visitors seeking spiritual fellowship or the quiet atmosphere of prayer.
