Discover Vaduz: Culture, Wine and Trails
Vaduz combines a striking landmark with art, wine tradition, nature and varied trails. Vaduz Castle towers around 120 metres above Vaduz and is the landmark of Liechtenstein. For a trip with different interests, the city therefore offers a special mix of cultural discoveries, green places to relax and active pursuits.
Vaduz Castle and Special Insights
It is not possible to visit Vaduz Castle. However, the official visitor offerings include a 3D exploration and an augmented reality experience. This allows you to get to know the landmark in a different way, without planning a regular tour of the castle.
One of the cultural highlights is the Liechtenstein Treasure Chamber. It displays a collection of precious objects from five centuries that is unique in the Alpine region. The collection of Adulf Peter Goop includes numerous works by Fabergé. St. Florin's Parish Church also lends the trip a historical touch: its foundation stone was laid on 17 August 1869. The church with its front tower was built according to plans by Vienna cathedral architect Friedrich von Schmidt in the Neo-Gothic style.
Art, Architecture and Places with Character
In the nature park on Gerberweg near the Liechtenstein National Library, Peter Hemmi's “Blühende Sprache” sculpture stands in the pond. Gerberweg Nature Park is a simple park west of the Giessen, with meadows, trees and water. It complements the cultural stops with a peaceful outdoor setting.
Other distinctive buildings include Hofstätte Hintergass and the Red House. Hofstätte Hintergass was originally built in 1494 as a winemaker's house with a wine cellar and is now one of the oldest surviving farm buildings in Liechtenstein. Its rooms are available to the Vaduz Winegrowers' Cooperative for tastings, courses and social events. The Red House is a four-storey residential tower with an almost square floor plan. The ground floor as well as the first and second upper floors consist of visible hewn natural-stone masonry.
Wine Trails, Nature and Activity
Those who want not only to taste wine but also understand how it is made can include the Wine Educational Trail in Herawingert in their plans. Twelve information panels explain the journey from grapevine to wine pressing. The trail passes Pinot Noir vines and ends in a varietal garden belonging to the Princely Winery of Liechtenstein. A tasting at the Princely Winery also provides a detailed insight into the world and history of the princely wine.
For active days, Vaduz offers numerous cycle paths through wooded landscapes, along small rivers and past other natural beauties. The Vaduz circular route of the Liechtenstein Trail begins in the city centre at the Liechtenstein Center. A longer section is 6.4 kilometres long and offers a viewing platform in the Letzi area overlooking the valley. Depending on your preferred travel pace, you can give different weight to cultural stops, wine and physical activity.
A Suitable Base for Planning Your Trip
When looking for a holiday apartment in Vaduz, it is worth first deciding on the desired focus of your trip. Culture enthusiasts can place the Treasure Chamber, parish church, Red House and the city's distinctive architecture at the centre of their plans. For days focused on enjoyment, the Wine Educational Trail, Princely Winery and Hofstätte Hintergass offer different themes. Those who enjoy cycling will find another point of connection in the numerous cycle paths through wooded landscapes and along small rivers.
The Vaduz local bus is free of charge for getting around locally. The Old Rhine Bridge is a covered wooden bridge connecting Vaduz in Liechtenstein with the Swiss municipality of Sevelen. This means that experiences near the border and different forms of transport can also form part of your trip. For a more detailed selection of locations, you can also visit Vaduz. Other destinations for planning your trip include Eschen, Gamprin, Triesen, Triesenberg and Ruggell.
