Dreiliņi: Green Corridors, History and Walks
Dreiliņi combines nature observation, walks and historical traces with convenient connections to other districts of Riga. Those looking for a holiday apartment as a base for a variety of days during their trip will find several points of interest here: bodies of water and green spaces for peaceful hours, a place steeped in history and an important note about the current use of Dreiliņkalns.
Green Landscapes for Walks
The Piķurga flows through the eastern part of Dreiliņi. In addition, the Dreiliņupīte forms part of a green corridor through Dreiliņi. Both bodies of water are among the landscape features that characterise the area beyond its individual natural sites. There is a forested area near Aronas iela in the eastern part of Dreiliņi.
Another distinctive feature is the Dreiliņkalna meadow. This is an urban meadow with plants typical of natural meadows. It is specially maintained and mown less frequently. This makes it an interesting destination for travellers who, during their stay, also wish to notice the less spectacular but characteristic landscape details of a place.
Dreiliņkalns: Note the Current Restriction
Due to municipal restrictions, Dreiliņkalns is currently open only for walks. This note is important for planning excursions: the site can be considered as a walking destination, but you should not assume that other forms of use are available there. A cross-country ski trail was also offered at Dreiliņkalns, and it was open daily from 10:00 to 21:00. This information describes an earlier offering and should not be equated with the currently stated use for walks.
Discover the History of Dreiliņi
The name of the area also bears a historical trace. Dreiliņi is derived from Melchior Dreiling, a member of the Riga City Council. During the eight-month siege of Riga in 1709–1710, the Russian field marshal Boris Sheremetev established a military camp at Dreiliņu Manor. This connection to the history of Riga gives a stay an additional cultural perspective, especially if you would like to learn about historical contexts alongside taking walks.
Transport and Choosing Accommodation
Dreiliņi has a well-developed network of main roads with sufficiently convenient connections to other districts of Riga. Accessibility by public transport is also relatively good compared with other districts of Riga, both in terms of the routes and the number of services. When looking for a holiday apartment, this is a useful selection factor if you would like to combine nature experiences in Dreiliņi with other destinations in Riga. The decisive factor remains the type of daily itinerary you prefer: peaceful walks and landscape impressions or a stay with a stronger focus on the city.
Announced Events in Dreiliņkalna Park
A publicly announced all-day festival in Dreiliņkalna Park was planned to include sporting, musical and rhythmic activities. Minigolf, curling, rock climbing, a novuss tournament and a kite-making workshop were listed. The event serves as an example of the range envisaged for such a programme; however, the announcement does not imply a permanent programme of events. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore distinguish between a nature-oriented stay and travel planning based on specific dates announced at the time.
For other places to include in your travel plans, you can also look at Ulbroka, Rumbula and Līči.
