Rudbārži: Manor History, Park and Special Discoveries
Accommodation in Rudbārži
Rudbārži appeals to travellers who would like to combine cultural history and nature experiences. Around the church and manor, historic sites tell the story of the Latvian village's past, while Rudbārži Forest Park offers its own discoveries with a diversity of plants and an educational trail. If you are looking for a holiday apartment in Rudbārži, you can therefore plan your trip according to whether you would prefer to experience historic sites, a nature-focused walk or a mixture of both.
Church and manor as historical focal points
The church of Rudbārži is one of the smallest churches in Latvia. In 1989, a memorial plaque for the deported residents of Rudbārži was erected on the church grounds. It is therefore one of the places where the history of the village is reflected in a tangible memorial.
Rudbārži Manor also offers several historical points of reference. It was built in 1835 as the property of the von Fircks family, commissioned by Baroness Thea von Fircks. The manor was burned down in 1905, and its restoration began in 1908. The battalion of Colonel Oskars Kalpaks stayed at Rudbārži Manor Castle at the end of January and in February 1919. The Hall of Heroes at Rudbārži Manor presents significant periods of Latvia's struggles for freedom and was restored in 2016. The sequence of construction, fire, restoration and remembrance of the struggles for freedom brings together several chapters of local and national history at the manor.
Rudbārži Manor Castle is located on the Riga–Liepāja A9.
Rudbārži Forest Park and educational trail
Rudbārži Forest Park is a former manor park covering an area of 9.6 hectares. The park is home to 57 introduced plant species. In addition to its historical themes, the site therefore also offers an opportunity to explore the landscape and plant life. The Barons' Cemetery is also located in Rudbārži Park.
A special way to explore the park is the educational trail. Using a map, you look for checkpoints featuring bird images and QR codes. The QR codes display interesting facts about the respective birds. For families, this can become a shared discovery walk in which children and adults are not merely out and about, but also receive specific information at the individual stations. At the same time, it remains open whether the historic manor or observing nature should be the greater focus during a stay.
Which accommodation suits your travel plans?
When looking for a holiday apartment in Rudbārži, it is worth deciding on your preferred pace of travel. Those who would like to combine several themes can plan the educational trail as a separate activity alongside the historic sites.
