Discover Kangari: Moorland, Railway Heritage and Nature Experiences
Kangari combines railway history with a diverse landscape of hills, lake and moorland. The surrounding area offers the Lielie Kangari observation tower, trails through the protected area and special insights into the region’s past. Those looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Kangari can therefore tailor their stay to different interests: nature experiences, historical discoveries or active days outdoors.
Historical traces at Kangaru Station
One prominent destination is Kangaru Station. It opened on 26 November 1935 on the Riga–Ērgļi railway line. The two-storey brick station building was constructed in November 1937 to a design by architect Voldemārs Ozoliņš and is a cultural monument of local significance. These details make the station an interesting stop for travellers who want not only to admire the landscape but also to learn about its historical context.
The wider railway history also goes back a long way: in 1935, Kangari was one of five railway stations in Ropažu pagasts. Kangari was a stop on the historic 600 mm narrow-gauge railway line from Ikšķile Station to Ropažu muiža Manor. This line was also actively used in 1919 during the Latvian War of Independence. Such historical connections give a stay in Kangari a cultural dimension without requiring you to limit yourself to a purely museum-focused itinerary.
Lake, Moorland and Views over Lielie Kangari
The Lielie Kangari esker is located in the vicinity of Kangari. It has a relative height of 27 metres and reaches 78 metres above sea level. The Lielie Kangari protected area includes Lake Kangaru and the Lielais Kangaru Moor. This gives the area a variety of landscapes for travel planning that combines active trails with nature observation.
The 33-metre-high Lielie Kangari observation tower has a viewing platform overlooking Lake Kangaru and Lielkangaru Moor. At the beginning of the Lielo Kangaru Trail, there is also a purpose-built health trail inviting visitors to exercise and stay active. Information boards with photographs along the trail tell stories and legends about events, places, figures and phenomena in the surrounding area. Those looking for a hike that is less purely athletic can therefore also experience the trail as a natural and cultural discovery.
Trails and Special Activities
The section of the Zaļais ceļš in Ropažu novads forms part of the Riga–Pskov GreenWays route. In addition, the former Riga–Ērgļi railway line was used during the 2026 Retro Running Festival: the route followed the Zaļais ceļš from Kangaru Station to Bajāri. For guided nature experiences, walks with bog shoes can be booked in the Kangari area through Purva bridēji. This option complements classic walks with a special way to experience the moorland.
The Retro Running Festival is described as a sporting tradition in Ropažu novads. In the 2026 edition, three distances were available: 10 kilometres, 5 kilometres and a 500-metre children’s run. The festival took place on 1 May at Kangaru Station and was held for the third time. The programme also included sightseeing excursions as well as activities at the station and in its surroundings.
The Right Accommodation for Your Travel Plans
When looking for accommodation in Kangari, it helps to decide in advance what you would most like to focus on. If you mainly want to combine landscapes and physical activity, the observation tower, Lielo Kangaru Trail, health trail and bog-shoe walks take centre stage. If you are more interested in culture and history, Kangaru Station, its architectural history and the historic railway connections offer opportunities for discovery of their own.
This makes Kangari a destination for different travel paces: historical exploration at the station, exercise on trails and routes, and landscape experiences by the lake and moorland. As another travel idea, you can also take a look at Vecmuiža.
