Ropaži Municipality combines protected landscapes, varied trails, lakes and distinctive cultural sites. Between observation towers, old manor parks, bodies of water and historic buildings, a destination with many facets takes shape: nature experiences stand alongside sports activities, Latvian cultural heritage and regional history.

Nature and Educational Trails

One defining landscape is Lielie Kangari, Latvia’s largest esker ridge and a nature reserve that lies partly within Ropaži Municipality. The protected area covers 1,972.4 hectares in Ropaži Municipality and the Suntaži Parish of Ogre Municipality and has been part of the Natura 2000 network since 2005. Within the area there is a 33.5-metre-high observation tower and a two-kilometre nature trail with information and exercise stations.

Several shorter trails lead through other types of scenery. The Diž-Ozolu Nature Trail runs through oak stands and has information boards about the trees and bee shelters; picnic and fire-making areas are also available there. The Zaķumuiža Nature Trail is almost two kilometres long, moderately difficult and suitable for walking with a pram, cycling and cross-country skiing in winter. It passes through an old manor park with centuries-old trees as well as a variety of plants, insects and birds.

The Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Educational Trail also combines nature with literature. As a round trip, it is approximately two kilometres long. Information boards focus on nature, animals and insects and also contain quotations from the writer. The Jānis Jaunsudrabiņš Memorial Room is located in the library of Garkalne Parish in Garkalne, Ropaži Municipality.

The Tumšupes meži Nature Reserve presents another side of the natural environment. Protected habitats include swamp forests, alluvial forests, pristine raised bogs, old or natural boreal forests, lichen-rich pine forests, old mixed deciduous forests, as well as running waters and natural river sections.

Lakes, Trails and Active Experiences

At Lake Ulbroka, an approximately one-kilometre walking and activity trail leads to an observation platform in the lake, bathing areas, sports fields, outdoor exercise equipment, a skate park, and an obstacle and activity course. The recreation area there also includes a beach, a bathing area, volleyball and football fields, a skate park, an obstacle course and a climbing wall.

The Saurieši gravel pit area consists of four bodies of water separated by roads and paths. The paths are suitable for walking, running and cycling; the regional Dreiliņi–Mazozoli cycle route, which leads to the Lejasdaugava–Ogre river valley and is numbered 12, passes through the area. The four bodies of water offer opportunities for swimming, boating and fishing.

On the shore of Lake Langstiņi, LANGHO rents out SUP boards, catamarans and boats. No motorised vehicles operate on the lake. The on-site facilities also include a café serving sweet and savoury Belgian waffles, snacks and non-alcoholic drinks.

The “333” sports complex expands the range of active experiences with karting for professional drivers, beginners, groups and children. It also includes a winter track with studded tyres. The complex additionally features an off-road park, an inflatable water course with SUP rental, and motocross and hard enduro tracks.

Culture and History

The ruins of Ropaži Castle lie on the bank of the Lielā Jugla beside the P10 road. They are the remains of a castle built in the 14th century by brothers of the Teutonic Order. Ropaži is also home to a neo-Gothic brick church built in 1893. Restoration work has been carried out at Ropaži Church since 1997.

The present-day Ropaži Pastorate was built in the early 19th century on the site of an 18th-century wooden pastorate and completed in 1804. In 2007, Ropaži Pastorate was granted the status of a state-protected cultural monument. Another historical connection is provided by the Kangari railway station building, which is now a cultural monument of local significance.

Latvian cultural heritage is visible in Līgo Park, where 11 stone sculptures featuring Latvian ornamental symbols stand. During the summer season, the park hosts dance and choral concerts, open-air theatre performances and festivals. The “Ulbrokas Pērle” cultural centre, opened in 2020, offers cultural events in various genres and styles and has two concert halls.
