Holiday Apartment in Olaines Municipality – Nature, Cycling and Culture

At Līdumu Quarry, there are recreational areas with wooden pontoons, a walking path, picnic areas with grills, a playground, and facilities for volleyball, football and basketball. The site is complemented by a wake park.

Nature

The nature trail around Līdumu Quarry is approximately 2.8 kilometres long and suitable for prams. Līdumu Quarry can be reached by car, bicycle, inline skates or skateboard, as well as on foot via the path between Olaine and Līdumu Quarry.

Olaines Mežaparks comprises a naturally grown pine forest and a well-equipped area in the centre of Olaine. From May to September, cultural events and open-air film screenings take place there on an outdoor stage. There are also outdoor fitness equipment and a “Meža kaķa” course for children.

Thirteen protected bird species have been recorded in Melnā ezera purvs. During the autumn migration, bean geese and greater white-fronted geese stop there to rest.

Cycling

Olaines Velotrase is 220 metres long and designed as a circuit with hills of different heights, bends and ramps. It is asphalted and integrated into an existing pine park; at the same time, it is considered the first asphalted Velotrase in the Pierīga region. Olaine Skatepark and the Velotrase form a complex where bicycles, primarily BMX bikes, scooters, inline skates and skateboards can be used.

A 510-metre-long path features distinctive oak elements for balance, strength and agility exercises, as well as relaxed recreation. The tourist guide to Olaines Municipality lists three cycling routes with a total length of more than 40 kilometres. For travel by train, Olaine railway station is one of three stations on the 41.6-kilometre Riga–Jelgava railway line; next to the station there are covered bicycle parking spaces and a bicycle service station.

Culture

The “Laboratorija” exhibition at the Olaine History and Art Museum presents the history of the four major factories “Biolar”, “Olainfarm”, the glue factory and the plastics recycling factory. It includes an interactive game with 3D solutions. The museum itself has five exhibitions, a modern exhibition hall and a publicly accessible collection storage. It also offers educational activities, museum education programmes and excursions in the territory of Olaines Municipality.

The “Blokmāju stāsti” cultural route comprises nine stops with augmented reality elements that can be scanned using a smartphone and app. A cultural walk with the same name is planned and is intended to explain how Olaine was planned and built; topics such as Soviet architecture and life in prefabricated apartment-block neighbourhoods are also planned.

A 45-metre-high water tower in Olaine bears the graffiti artwork “Heirēka!”.

History

The Vidzemes-Kurzemes-Zemgales boundary posts are a state-protected cultural monument. They once marked the border between the Governorates of Courland and Vidzeme. In Pēternieki stands the Roman Catholic Church of St Peter, completed in 1940. Olaines Municipality is also home to the municipality’s oldest cultural monument of national significance.

Family Experiences

Maijrozes Stables offers stable tours and horseback rides for children. Afterwards, picnics can be organised or sausages can be roasted over a campfire. In Pēternieki, the stable also offers riding lessons and family celebrations.

Maijrozes Stables can be reached by car via the Riga–Jelgava road, the turn-off towards Code and then a route of approximately 2 kilometres. In Jaunolaine, there is a forest path near the Jelgava road at the address Ālupi 1.

“Ooo! Sajūtu darbnīca” combines a shop with candle-making workshops.
