Culture and Stories from Meņģele

One notable cultural destination is the Lutheran Church of Meņģele. It was built in 1795 and is a state-protected architectural monument. The altarpiece contains the altar painting “Golgotha”, created by Georgs Rūdolfs Kārings in 1846. The church interior and an exhibition with reproductions by K. Hūns can be visited by prior appointment. Therefore, do not plan this visit entirely spontaneously; take the appointment requirement into account when organizing your day.

The history of the writer Sudrabu Edžus is also closely connected with the Meņģele parish: it is considered his birthplace. The Dullā-Dauka Trail was created along an avenue of oaks and birches at the writer’s former favourite resting place. It includes several notable stones, including one bearing the inscription “Dullais Dauka”. The “Sudraba Edžus Local History 3 rooms” museum is located in a former kindergarten building and presents an exhibition about the writer and the local history of Meņģele. Further cultural points of interest are located in the Meņģele Community Centre: an exhibition hall is situated on the second floor. Meņģele Dievu (Upuru) kalns is also a state-protected cultural monument. In folklore, it is associated with stories about an oak tree beneath which the gods are said to have been entertained. The surrounding area also includes the Meņģele Medieval Cemetery, an archaeological monument of local significance, and the gate chapel of Meņģele Cemetery, an architectural monument from the late 18th century.

Ogres ieleja Nature Park includes Meņģele parish. Its landscape features the unregulated Ogre River, its valley with varied riverside scenery, diverse forests, extensive meadows, rapids, steep slopes, springs, erratic boulders and old large trees. This combination makes the area interesting for travellers who want to combine nature observation with culture and activity.

For a manageable hike, the marked “Ogres ielejā” nature trail route is a good option. The circular trail is 2.5 km long and is located at the Senogres Bridge in Meņģele parish. The Meņģele observation tower offers a different view of the surroundings. From there, the Orthodox Church of Aderkaši can be seen. The tower is located on road V964 from Taurupe towards Meņģele; after the Aderkaši Church, it is approximately 500 m farther on the left side of the road. Route No. 163 also passes through Meņģele and goes past the observation tower.

If you would like to get to know Meņģele from the water, spring is a stated period for water tourism on the Ogre River in the parish. The official route list also includes an approximately 20 km boating route from Senogres Bridge to Meņģele, taking 5 hours.
