Discover Veldze: Veldze Depression, Riežupe and Culture

Veldze is a destination for anyone who wants to combine landscapes, unusual natural features and traces of cultural history. The place was formerly called Rumbenieki and is located in Rumbas Parish. Its character is shaped by the Veldze Depression, the river of the same name and a series of independent excursion destinations. This allows you to tailor your trip to your interests, moving between river landscapes, routes, caves and regional history.

River Landscape with Distinctive Forms

The Veldze Depression is a gently undulating glacial-lacustrine plain. The Veldze River forms wide loops there; its lower course is highly winding. Geographically, it is a left-bank tributary of the Riežupe, flowing through the Kabiles and Rumbas municipalities in Kuldīga Municipality. Veldze is one of the largest settlements on the banks of the Veldze River.

A notable natural attraction is Veldze Waterfall. It is approximately 0.8 to 0.9 metres high and 11 to 16 metres wide. In the immediate vicinity of the destination, it is located on the Veldze River about 400 metres before its confluence with the Riežupe and about 400 metres downstream from the P120 road. It is also located in Rumbenieki about 140 metres south of an old lime kiln. Both banks of the waterfall are privately owned; no public access has been established. From the roadside, a path leads across a meadow along the Veldze until the waterfall can be heard. You should take this information into account when planning your excursion.

Routes, Bridge and Riežupe Sand Caves

The surrounding area offers several different ways to get to know the landscape. The route Pa Riežupes apkārtni includes a 18-kilometre short loop and a 23-kilometre long loop. It passes through the nature reserve Ventas ieleja and the Riežupe nature park. Those travelling by bicycle can find another point of reference in the Riežupe cycling route: Veldze Waterfall is listed there as the third point of interest.

In the immediate vicinity of the destination, a footbridge and cycle bridge spans the Riežupe. It is 2.5 metres wide and 42 metres long. Next to it is a recreational area managed by the Latvian State Forests, with a shelter, table, benches and fire pit. For a family or travel group wishing to alternate between active stretches and a break outdoors, this place offers practical starting points for planning the day. The P120 and P121 roads cross the Veldze River and help with spatial orientation.

The Riežupe Sand Caves are a highlight in their own right. The cave labyrinth is 2 kilometres long in total; 460 metres can be visited. It is considered Latvia’s longest cave labyrinth and was excavated by hand over three generations. Visits are intended to take place with a guide, and the period from April to October is specified. This makes it particularly easy to combine a stay in Veldze with a planned nature and cultural experience.

School, Open-Air Church and Historical Traces

Veldze also has interesting points of cultural and historical interest away from the river and caves. The Old School of Veldze is of local cultural and historical importance. The four-grade Veldze primary school was founded in 1878 as an Orthodox parish auxiliary school. A Mazpulks youth organisation was also established at the Veldze school in 1930. These landmarks make the educational history and community life of the place visible, without requiring a large collection of attractions.

The open-air church Bethel holds baptisms, weddings, services and special ceremonies outdoors in summer. Another historical name is the Veldze subsidiary estate, in Latvian Veldzes pusmuiža, which was known as Welsen Manor.
