Staburadze combines an impressive landscape history with memorial sites, exhibitions and paths through a culturally shaped environment. Those looking for a holiday apartment in Staburadze can therefore organise their stay in very different ways: the focus may be on the history of the flooded natural monument, Latvian choral culture or a walk with several stops.

Staburags: a natural monument beneath the water

Staburags was an 18.5-metre-high tufa cliff on the left bank of the Daugava Canyon. The cliff formed after the last Ice Age and was associated with legends and stories of rafters. Today, the most important part of the natural monument, Staburags itself, lies beneath the waters of the Pļaviņu Reservoir. The Liepavots spring, which originated from Staburags, was also later flooded.

This change makes Staburadze a destination where landscape and memory are closely connected. The original rock cannot be described as a present-day excursion destination; rather, its significance is passed on through the preserved memorial sites and historical accounts.

Vīgantes Park: memorial sites, exhibitions and a garden

Vīgantes Park is home to the “Dieva auss” memorial stone dedicated to the flooded Staburags. The park also features the “Daina” sculpture, a daylily garden and the Staburags Saieta Nams with exhibitions. Visitors wishing to combine natural history and culture will find several different points of connection here, without this implying any particular order or length of route.

The area’s musical tradition is also part of this picture. Activities by choirs and the organisation of song festivals began in the park of the former Vīgante estate in the early 1920s. The first official Staburags Song Festival is dated to 24 June 1924; the principal conductor was Teodors Reiters. The Pēteris Barisons gazebo in Vīgantes Park contains information about the composer, his work and the tradition of song festivals.

Walking Trails and the Memory of Pēteris Barisons

The “Kā zvēri Daugavu raka” walking trail leads from the Pēteris Barisons cottage to the gazebo. In Vīgantes Park, the new walking trail of this name was ceremonially opened on 18 November. This means that a stay in Staburadze can also be explored through a route and its named stops.

Another cultural stop is Pēteris Barisons’s family home “Skudras” in Staburaga parish. In 1979, a memorial room dedicated to the composer and an exhibition were opened there. The exhibition displays personal belongings of Pēteris Barisons, musical instruments, documents and other contemporary evidence. Guided tours of “Skudras” can be arranged by prior registration. If you would like to include this visit in your plans, registration should therefore be part of your travel preparations.

Which accommodation suits your travel plans?

When choosing a holiday apartment in Staburadze, the main consideration is the focus you want for your trip. If you are particularly interested in the natural monument and its traditions, you can organise your days around the memorial sites associated with Staburags. Those wishing to explore the musical aspect in greater depth will find several cultural themes in the information at the Pēteris Barisons gazebo, the Staburags Saieta Nams and the exhibition at “Skudras”. For a trip with children, the walking trail can become a shared opportunity for discovery, while exhibitions and memorial sites offer more leisurely activities.

When looking for your accommodation, it is therefore worth first deciding which of these experiences should shape your stay. Staburadze is understood less through a single attraction than through the interplay of flooded landscapes, music history, memorial sites and walking trails.
