Ikšķile – Trails, Culture and Views of the Daugava
Accommodation in Ikšķile
Ikšķile combines winter activities, a river landscape, island history, culture and special culinary experiences. Depending on the time of year and your interests, you can plan an active day in the Ogres Zilie kalni area, follow the Way of St. James, discover historic churches and monuments, or get to know Latvian specialities at a wine tasting. This combination makes the town a diverse destination for travellers who want to combine nature experiences with cultural impressions.
Active Days in the Ogres Zilie kalni Area
When there is snow, the cross-country ski trail from Ogres Zilie kalni runs from Ikšķile to Ogre and back. Its total length is almost 12 km. The trail begins on the Ikšķile side, so it is possible to access it from the town side of Ikšķile. For planning your day, the weather conditions are therefore especially important: the activity explicitly depends on snow, while the trail itself provides a specific sporting option for winter.
Milžu taka is also located in the same area, an adventure park with an obstacle course among the trees of Ogres Zilie kalni Park. Visitors can test their strength on three courses with different levels of difficulty. Those travelling with children or in a mixed group can combine this active programme item with other experiences in Ikšķile instead of planning the entire day around a single activity.
A nature-oriented addition is the Forest Bee Educational Trail. It is located at the beginning of the Ogres Zilie kalni area on the Ikšķile side and is 1 km from Ikšķile railway station. A route can begin at Ikšķile railway station. This information helps you plan an outing independently of a particular means of transport, without presenting the educational trail and the railway station as a single circular route.
Water, Islands and the Way of St. James
Ikšķile Beach offers views of the Daugava and St. Meinard Island. In summer, the Ikšķile Water and Recreation Centre offers boat trips to Meinard Island and Death Island. The ruins of Ikšķile Church on St. Meinard Island can be reached by boat or ferry. When the water level of the reservoir of the Riga Hydroelectric Power Plant falls, they can also be reached on foot via the former road that has emerged from the water. You should therefore take the current water level into account when planning this visit.
The Way of St. James passes through Ikšķile, Ogre and Ķegums. The route is 50 km in total and can be walked year-round. The section is marked with yellow arrows and scallop shells on a dark blue background. This gives Ikšķile a clearly recognisable access point to a longer pilgrimage route, where you can adapt the desired stage length to your travel plans.
Cultural History and Local Features
The house of artist and set designer Jānis Kuga was built according to his own design. It is a locally significant architectural monument and bears VKPAI number 8232. Ikšķile Lutheran Church is also closely associated with the artist: its altarpiece was created by the artist from Ikšķile and professor at the Latvian Academy of Art, J. Kuga.
The Lutheran church also has a precisely documented construction history. Its foundation stone was laid on 28 June 1931, and it was consecrated in 1933. The architect was P. Kundziņš; the church is an architectural monument of national significance. Ikšķile Open-Air Stage complements this cultural picture as a site of cultural and historical significance and has held monument status since 2008. A monument to Saint Meinard was also erected on the outskirts of the Riga–Daugavpils road on 24 September 2010.
Another religious site is the church of the Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites, which was consecrated on 2 October 2011. The Monastery of the Discalced Carmelites has been Latvia’s first contemplative cloistered monastery since the Reformation in the 16th century. Together with the Way of St. James and the history of the church ruins, this part of Ikšķile shows how diverse the town’s spiritual and historical themes are.
Culinary Experiences and Choosing Your Accommodation
At the Vīna ceļš experience in Ikšķile, Libertu birch sap wine as well as rhubarb and berry wines from Vīna Ceļš are tasted. During a visit, six different wines, traditional wine accompaniments such as cheese and olives, and chocolate made from cocoa beans produced at the same production site are offered. This is an independent way to complement your trip with a local flavour.
When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Ikšķile, you can therefore first consider which priorities should shape your stay: winter activities, adventure in the forest, boat trips, pilgrimage, cultural history or culinary experiences. This allows you to align your accommodation choice with your personal travel plans while retaining room for different daily rhythms. For further travel planning, you can also access Turkalne and Tīnūži.
