Plieņciems combines a distinctive dune landscape with a beach, protected nature and trails leading to special places. The Latvian coastal village is located in western Latvia on the coast of the Gulf of Riga, in the Piejūras Lowland. For families and other travellers who would like to alternate between a day at the beach, exploring the landscape and small cultural and historical discoveries, the village therefore offers various starting points for planning a trip.

The Plieņciema kāpa and the protected coastal area

The Plieņciema kāpa is the main attraction. It is one of the last migrating dunes in Latvia and is regarded as an outstanding example of a dune ecosystem. At the same time, it is a natural area protected as a Natura 2000 site. The “Plieņciema kāpa” nature reserve partly encompasses the inhabited area of Plieņciems. This combination of a settlement and a protected dune landscape defines the character of the village and makes the landscape an important consideration when choosing your holiday apartment.

Beach and orientation on site

Plieņciema pludmale is an unofficial bathing spot in Plieņciems, in Engures pagasts. A wooden boardwalk leads from the car park to Plieņciems pludmale. Plieņciems Beach is also described as an unofficial beach in the village of Plieņciems within the protected ĪADT “Baltā kāpa” area. If you would like to combine a stay at the beach with time in nature, you should take this special classification of the bathing area into account when planning your day.

Trails with different starting points

The LVM Trail established by Latvijas Valsts meži on the northern side of Plieņciems leads to the beach. The Robežas Trail is located on the southern boundary of Plieņciems. The Plieņupes Trail begins at the entrance to the village, near a small bridge over the Plieņupe. The specific starting and ending points help you take your preferred way of spending the day into account when searching for a suitable holiday apartment.

History between fishing nets and a seaside resort

The history of the village is also closely connected with the coastal landscape. Vabu laukums was formerly used for drying fishing nets. The Plieņciems cemetery is located nearby on a dune ridge close to the open, sandy depression of Vabu laukums; it has cultural and historical value and is therefore situated in an unusual location. Plieņciems was already mentioned in the 18th century as a popular seaside resort for the landowners of the surrounding area. In 1810, Elisabeth, the wife of the Russian Tsar Alexander I, stayed for six weeks at the White Dune of Plieņciems.

Choosing Plieņciems as a holiday destination

A holiday apartment in Plieņciems is particularly suitable for a trip where the landscape and specific excursion destinations set the pace. For a day at the beach, the bathing spot, the boardwalk and the LVM Trail leading to the beach provide clear orientation. For further discoveries, the Robežas Trail, the Plieņupes Trail, the cemetery and Vabu laukums are available as independent destinations.

For further options when choosing a location, you can also consider Smārde, Ragaciems, Bigauņciems, Apšuciems, Bērzciems, Klapkalnciems, Lapmežciems and Engure.
