Zebras Muiža: Lakes, Springs and Nature Trails

Zebras Muiža combines an impressive landscape of lakes and springs with quiet forest paths, historic traces and special viewpoints. Anyone planning a trip to Latvia and wishing to combine nature experiences with culture will find a variety of ways to plan their day here. Depending on your preferred focus, you can explore spring fens and swampy forests, visit an archaeological site or plan longer routes through wooded uplands.

Lakes, springs and swampy landscapes

The “Zebrus un Svētes ezers” nature reserve is characterised by eutrophic lakes, swampy forests, mineral-rich springs and spring fens. The Zebrus avoti springs have a distinctive landscape character of their own: here, springs, spring fens and the glacially formed slope of the depression of Lake Zebrus meet. Visible spring outlets make Zebrus avoti an illustrative destination for anyone interested in the forms and transitions of a water-rich landscape.

The elevations between the lakes also create distinct features. Zebrenes Elku kalns rises between Lake Svētes and Lake Zebrus, about 20 metres above the swampy surroundings. Krievkalni is a wooded ridge whose highest summit reaches 149 metres above sea level. From there, a broad view opens across the forests of Zemgale. An LVM picnic area with tables, benches, a fire pit and an observation platform is located at the summit.

Archaeology and traditional sites

The area around Zebras Muiža also offers points of interest for a trip with a historical focus. Avotiņu senkapi is a locally significant archaeological cultural monument dating from the Middle Iron Age. At Avotiņi, Zebras Muiža, Avotiņu senkapi comprises an archaeological burial ground and settlement. This means the landscape can be viewed not only as a natural area, but also as a place bearing traces of earlier settlement.

On the eastern shore of Lake Zebrus lies Ezerlūķu pilskalns, which is about 30 metres high. The hill is also part of the “Pa seno zemgaļu takām” route. Zebrenes Elku kalns has another historical dimension: it is considered a place where ancestral gods were worshipped and sacrifices were made. Visiting such places allows you to combine observing nature with engaging with the region’s past, without having to limit the day to a single theme.

Routes for different day plans

For a longer tour, the “Apkārt Zebrus ezeram” route is available. It can be extended by about 14 kilometres to Pokaiņu mežs. In LVM Pokaiņu mežs, steep hills, deep valleys and scenic landscapes shape the surroundings. There are 15 kilometres of walking paths with thematic options. This information helps when planning accommodation and a suitable daily rhythm: you can focus an excursion on the landscape of lakes and springs or combine a longer stay with forest paths and viewpoints.

A special note concerns Zebrenes Elku kalns. The site cannot be reached by car; access requires walking for more than one kilometre along the swampy shore of Lake Svētes. You should take this specific access situation into account when planning your day. When choosing a holiday apartment or holiday house, it is therefore particularly important to consider which excursions you want to make the focus of your stay and how much time you want to allow for routes through nature.

Water experiences and quiet alternatives

Fishing is available in the “Vipēdis” recreation area with the appropriate permit. Boat trips are also available there. The area thus complements the walking paths, viewpoints and archaeological destinations with an opportunity to spend a day more closely connected to the water.
