Rāmuļi: School History and Windmills
Accommodation in Rāmuļi
Rāmuļi offers two very different starting points for planning a trip: a school history that can be traced back to 1864, and the technological history of windmills. At Kārkliņi Campsite, there is also a shared swimming area with a jetty, as well as various watercraft for hire. If you are looking for a holiday apartment or holiday home in Rāmuļi, these topics can help shape your choice of location: cultural and historical interests, a stay focused on the water, or both.
School history in several stages
The history of Rāmuļu pamatskola is traced back to 1864. The school and community house was built together in 1872 on land belonging to Vanadziņi; Rāmuļu School was inaugurated on 6 December 1873. The dates mark different stages: the earlier beginnings of the school’s history, the construction of the shared building, and its later inauguration. Antons Veidens headed the school from 1873 to 1893.
The historic school building was made of wood and included two classrooms, a dining room, two bedrooms, a kitchen, and three rooms for teachers. The layout shows a building where lessons, meals, and overnight stays came together; it was about more than just classrooms. In the 1930s, a second storey was added to the building. In 1958, a new school building was constructed, while a boarding school was established in the older building. The extension and the new building mark two distinct stages of construction.
Music and milling technology
Antons Veidens also founded and directed a choir in Rāmuļi. Dziesmu diena Rāmuļos is a commemorative event for conductor Daumants Gailis and takes place every five years. If you would like to plan your stay around this event, check the dates for the relevant edition.
The Rāmuļu windmills ceased operating in 1927. One technical detail concerns the mechanism for turning the mill cap: all the gears were made of wood, not iron. Thus, the history of the mills combines a clear end date with a specific detail about their construction. Compared with the school history, which reaches back to 1864, 1927 marks the end of milling operations.
Water access and getting there
At Kārkliņi Campsite, up to 15 guests can stay in their own tents. There is a shared swimming area with a jetty, and various watercraft are also available for hire. This offers a specific water-focused option alongside the historical attractions. If the swimming area, rentals, or tent capacity are important to your plans, check the current conditions before travelling.
