Melturi: Amata Geotrail and Historic Farmstead
Accommodation in Melturi
Melturi is a destination for anyone looking to combine nature experiences, historic architecture, and active days. The Amata shapes the landscape with striking dolomite outcrops and springs, while the “Melturi” farmstead offers an insight into regional architecture. Train connections and designated routes expand the possibilities for varied travel planning. When looking for a holiday apartment or holiday house in Melturi, you can therefore first decide whether your focus should be on hiking, cycling, culture, or a combination of these.
Out and About on the Amata Geological Nature Trail
A particularly specific nature excursion follows the section of the Amatas ģeotaka from Melturi to Kārļu zivjaudzētava. This section is 3.6 km long and is also the most difficult section of the Amata Geological Nature Trail; it is suitable for experienced hikers. The trail is marked but largely undeveloped. In some places, fallen trees and small tributaries must be crossed. These features are more important for planning your day than a general assessment: families and travel groups can consider in advance whether this more challenging route suits their desired pace of travel.
Dolomite Cliffs and Springs on the Amata
Īļaku iezis is located on the right bank of the Amata. Springs emerge beneath its dolomite outcrop. The cliff belongs to the Pļaviņas Formation, is up to 5 m high, and extends for 60 m. On the opposite bank, Vizuļu iezis lies about 200 m downstream. Those interested in geology and landforms will find two clearly named viewpoints on the Amata here. The named spring Melturu Svētavots is also connected with the Melturi–Kārļu zivjaudzētava route and Gauja National Park.
Historic “Melturi” Farmstead
The cultural side of the area includes the “Melturi” farmstead with the “Melturu dzīvojamā rija”. It preserves its original layout as well as the building structures, materials, and architectural details of individual historic buildings. Recognized as a regionally significant architectural monument, the farmstead adds its own distinctive element alongside the nature experiences. This creates a useful contrast for planning your trip: an active day on the nature trail can be followed by a more relaxing visit focused on historic architectural forms.
Cycling and Arriving by Train
Melturi is also an interesting starting point for longer tours. In Cēsu Municipality, the 105 km Ieriķi–Gulbene section of the “Zaļie dzelzceļi” route is designated. The route can be started at Melturi railway stop. The “Zaļie dzelzceļi” routes run along former railway lines and are suitable for hiking and cycling. Regular train connections to Riga and Valga are also available at Melturi railway stop. When choosing accommodation, you can therefore consider whether to plan individual nature and cultural experiences specifically or combine your stay with a longer cycling or hiking tour.
