Vigasio between waterways, art and polenta

Vigasio combines a landscape shaped by waterways with sacred art, historic architecture and the Fiera della Polenta. The municipality is home to the SIC/ZPS IT3210008 “Fontanili di Povegliano” protected area and an ecological corridor. The church, villa and Santuario add these concrete local points of reference. Rivers, drainage channels, springs and the corridor give the municipality a range of different landscape reference points.

Fontanili and springs

The SIC/ZPS IT3210008 “Fontanili di Povegliano” protected area is located within the municipality of Vigasio. At Vigasio’s northwestern edge, the area is crossed by the Tartaro River. It lies between the Tartarello River and the Fossa Liona.

In the eastern part of the municipality of Vigasio, an ecological corridor runs around the Fosse Solarina and Graicella. It begins at the springs that rise there and connects southeast of the town centre with the Tartaro corridor. Springs are places where water emerges from the ground. An ecological corridor connects different habitats.

Church, villa and sacred art

The first documentary mention of the church of San Zeno di Vigasio dates from 1004. This makes the church one of Vigasio’s earliest-dated historical points of reference.

Villa Portalupi, Farina, bears the name “La Zambonina” and dates from the 16th century. Its façade features Baroque-inspired elements, meaning elements reminiscent of Baroque design, and three loggias. A fresco in the left loggia depicts the “monda”. Loggias are open galleries incorporated into a façade.

The Santuario Madonna di Campagnamagra preserves a 15th-century fresco. It depicts the Madonna and Child, John the Baptist and Saint Christopher. Every year on 8 September, the Santuario celebrates the Feast of the Nativity of Mary. A fresco is a wall painting made on fresh plaster.

The composer Italo Montemezzi was born in Vigasio (Verona) on 4 August 1875. His biography adds a musical point of reference for the municipality to its architectural and sacred connections.

Polenta and a varied programme of events

At the Fiera della Polenta, polenta is served daily in a wide variety of versions and combinations. These include sopressa, mushrooms and Gorgonzola, as well as Baccalà alla vicentina. Polenta is a dish made from cooked cornmeal. A Fiera is a public event with a defined thematic focus.

The Fiera della Polenta programme also includes theatre performances and live concerts in a heated festival tent at the sports facilities. The programme includes gatherings of classic cars and historic tractors. Classic cars are historically preserved vehicles. Historic tractors are older agricultural vehicles.
