Holiday apartment in Susegana: Castle trails, churches and Venetian art

Susegana combines history, paths through vineyards and forests, and regional festivals. Between Castello di Collalto, Castello di San Salvatore and the churches of Susegana, there are various opportunities to spend a day exploring art, historical traces and the landscape.

Churches, castles and Venetian art

San Daniele della Vigna is considered Susegana’s first parish church and was built on Colle di San Daniele. A fragment of the original decoration has survived: a Madonna and Child by Mattia de la Barovera, dated 1480. The surviving image is the central focus as an individual detail within the church.

Castello di Collalto also tells of a long past. From 1461, it housed a Franciscan monastery. However, little of the castle and its walls remains today. On Collalto Hill, overlooking the Piave, the construction of a first fortified center is dated to 1110; this date is not securely documented, however.

The Castello di San Salvatore complex includes an 18th-century Venetian-style palace with works by important Venetian masters. Architecture and painting are brought together here within the same complex.

Walks through hills, vineyards and forests

The Sul cammino dei castelli footpath passes Castello di Collalto and Castello di S. Salvatore. The footpath runs through a green, car-free landscape.

The Passeggiata dei Collalto is 12.8 kilometers long; the walking time is four hours. It leads from Castello di Collalto through meadows, vineyards and forests to Castello di San Salvatore in Susegana. For day planning, the stated walking time can be treated as one continuous time frame for the route. The route therefore requires its own time block within the day’s itinerary.

The Passeggiata dei Collalto begins at the car park on Via Strada di Collalto next to Collalto’s primary schools.

Two trenches and an observation post in a cave were cleared on Colle della Tombola. Walks to First World War sites are planned there; the sites are privately owned by the Collalto family.

Festivals and tastings

The Festeggiamenti di San Giorgio in Collalto takes place during the last ten days of April and includes dance evenings, cultural evenings and gastronomic events. Spiedo is the festival’s main dish. The festival therefore takes place within a limited period at the end of April.

Hiking among the vineyards of the Castello offers a traveling tasting experience combining nature and history at the foot of Castello di San Salvatore.
