Churches, archaeology and Venetian villas

A prominent historical landmark is the parish church of San Benedetto Abate. It was consecrated to Saint Benedict the Abbot on the first Sunday of September 1695. An even earlier period is represented by the discovery in the Palù area near Orsago: flint tools used for hunting were found there, including arrowheads, scrapers for working hides and blades for cutting. Primitive ceramic objects were also found. These discoveries date from the final phases of the Neolithic, that is, from the period between 4000 and 3000 BC.

Several villas also lend historical depth to the townscape. Villa Sbrojavacca-Zanin dates from the 17th century and was built by the noble Sbrojavacca family. At the rear are a large park and a loggia with cross vaults; mascarons can be seen in the round arches. The inhabited villa can only be viewed from the outside. Villa Priuli-Chastonnay-Da Re was built at the end of the 17th century by the Venetian noble family of Ninfa Priuli. The year 1689 is engraved in the floor beneath the entrance portico. Villa Licini was built in 1879 by the family of the same name and is located on Via Mazzini, where you can discover it while out walking.

Another cultural point of interest is the Orsago municipal library. It is a public reading facility with a catalogued collection of books. It thus complements the historic buildings with a place dedicated to reading and public use.

Andar par rivai: trails, hedgerows and a spring-fed stream

The equipped Andar par rivai area can be reached via the blue trail or the trail called Andar par rivai. The landscape there is typical of the Po Valley: agricultural areas are bordered by medium-height hedgerows. Andar par rivai features three habitat types – mesophilic tree hedgerows, a spring-fed stream and various cultivated areas. The stream has a predominantly sandy bed and is home to aquatic plants, sticklebacks and frogs.

There is currently a wooden tower in the Risorgive area that serves as an observation tower. Together with the trail and the various habitats, this area offers a different view of Orsago from the one provided by the villas and the church.
