Motta di Livenza: Churches, Water and Regional Cuisine

Motta di Livenza is a small water town situated between the Livenza and Monticano rivers. The Livenzetta Canal crosses the center of Motta di Livenza and runs through the former riverbed of the Livenza.

Churches, Crypt and Cultural Heritage

The Cappella dell’Apparizione contains a crypt. Beneath the altar, a very old statue of the Virgin and Child is venerated in a marble niche. The present-day Duomo di Motta di Livenza was built from 1516 onwards based on a design by Antonio Buora. The Duomo thus complements the crypt with a second sacred building with its own architectural history.

The Santuario Basilica Madonna dei Miracoli is associated with an apparition of the Madonna in Motta di Livenza on 9 March 1510. Numerous pilgrims came to the site of the apparition immediately afterwards. The Chiesa di San Giovanni Battista is considered the oldest church in Motta di Livenza; its origins date back to the early period of Christianity in the Veneto. The date 1510 connects the basilica with a specific event in the town’s history.

Water Town and Cycling Options

Parco Spinade is integrated into the urban fabric of Motta di Livenza. The Passerella degli Alpini is a lattice structure from the 1930s that spans the Livenza and serves as a natural starting point for cycling tours. Motta di Livenza is known for Sopa Coada. The thick soup is usually prepared with stale bread, broth, Grana cheese and pigeon meat; in the Motta version, chicken replaces the pigeon meat. Part of the area also belongs to the production zones designated in the production regulations of the Lison-Pramaggiore DOC. The choice of meat distinguishes the local version from the usual preparation.
