Porto Viro between dunes and delta

Porto Viro combines nature observation with a landscape in which coastal history remains visible. North of Porto Viro’s town centre stretches the Pineta di Fornaci. It is characterised by fossil dunes: sand formations shaped by the wind near ancient coastlines. The Dune fossili di Porto Viro are part of the Parco Regionale Veneto del Delta del Po, are classified as Siti di Importanza Comunitaria (SIC), and are considered oases of biodiversity due to their distinctive vegetation. The Dune fossili di Donada reveal the ancient Adriatic coast that existed in Etruscan times; their preserved fossil dunes are among the last remnants of a coastal barrier system that formed between the pre-Roman Etruscan period and the early Middle Ages.

Wetlands and birdwatching

The Golena di Ca' Pisani covers approximately 43 hectares and includes the embankment section on the left bank of the Po di Maistra, wetlands, around 4 hectares of woodland, and areas formerly used for agriculture that now lie fallow. It has several paths, observation points for birdwatching, a small visitor centre and reconstructed traditional fishing structures. The Golena is an important bird habitat where, among others, little egrets, grey herons, great egrets, purple herons, squacco herons, black-winged stilts, bee-eaters, marsh harriers and hoopoes can be observed.

Cycling route, beach and boat trip

La Via delle Valli Sud is particularly suitable for birdwatching and nature photography; seasonal waterbirds, including flamingos, which are frequently seen, can be observed along the lagoon and valley waters. The route is an easy cycling route lasting 1 hour and 30 minutes, starting at the car park at Via delle Valli 1 in Porto Levante (Porto Viro). The Spiaggia di Scanno Cavallari is 4.5 km long. During the summer season, a short boat trip runs to Scanno Cavallari.

Culture in the Polesine

The Museo della Corte di Ca' Cappello occupies the rooms of a 17th-century complex. Its ethnographic section reconstructs rural life in the Polesine through a rural tavern from the 1950s, a kitchen, a bedroom and an attic with children's games and everyday objects. The beekeeping centre of Ca' Cappellino has a honey extraction room and a sales outlet for honey produced in the park, marketed under the brand Miele del Parco del Delta del Po. The Taglio di Porto Viro was a major hydraulic engineering project of the Republic of Venice in the early 17th century, through which a greater volume of water was diverted southwards.
