Holiday apartment in Guardea: Castles, nature and culture

Guardea combines the past with nature experiences in the Tiber River Park. Castello del Poggio, Guardea Vecchia, churches, the Eremo di Santa Illuminata and the Arco della Coscienza Planetaria offer different cultural perspectives. When choosing a holiday apartment in Guardea, this combination provides starting points for planning your days; the WWF Alviano Oasis adds birdwatching and nature photography to the experience.

Holiday apartment in Guardea between history and culture

Castello del Poggio was built by the Normans in 1034 on the site of an existing Byzantine fortress dating from the 7th century. In the 16th century, Antonio da Sangallo the Younger restored the complex. Among other additions, he gave it a portico, loggias and stairways, and converted it into a rectangular layout. Access must be arranged through the municipal administration.

The ruins of Guardea Vecchia stand on the hill immediately behind Guardea, in one of the most panoramic locations in the Amerino area. Largely preserved are a defensive system consisting of eight towers—six square and two semicircular—as well as a large central keep. The complex is privately owned and can only be visited by prior arrangement with the owner.

The parish church of San Pietro e Cesareo was built in the first decades of the 18th century on the site of an older rural church dedicated to Saint Cecilia. It is open continuously during the day.

Spiritual sites and special access arrangements

The Eremo di Santa Illuminata was founded around the year 1006 by Saint Romuald. Saint Francis of Assisi stayed there several times for prayer and contemplation. Restoration work has turned the hermitage and its church, after a long period of decline, back into a destination for pilgrims, scholars, walkers and those interested in slow tourism.

The Arco della Coscienza Planetaria was created through the cooperation of the municipality of Guardea, Club of Budapest Italia and a group of sculptors. Access to the site is via Via Vittorio Emanuele; at the level of the war memorial, turn right into Via del Giuoco. Admission is free.

Nature experiences on the Tiber

The WWF Alviano Oasis has two nature trails, observation hides, a lookout tower and a panoramic observation platform. One trail is a 1.5-kilometre accessible circular route; the other is a 3.5-kilometre, more natural trail. The oasis is used for birdwatching and nature photography; 250 bird species have been recorded there. The area is also part of a major migration corridor for birds.

The WWF Oasis protects 900 hectares within the Tiber River Park. The park extends across the municipalities of Guardea, Alviano, Montecchio and Civitella d'Agliano. The two trail lengths make it easier to plan according to walking intensity and interest in nature observation.
