Holiday apartment in Volano: wine, trails and village history
Volano’s historic centre is situated on a terrace at the edge of the valley. On the flat land, vineyards and orchards—especially apple orchards—shape the landscape. Marzemino is a distinctive wine produced in Volano. In this way, the village brings together its settlement structure, agriculture and winemaking tradition.

Along the main street of the historic centre, houses stand in two rows. These give rise to the picturesque groups of houses known as “cort”, with stone courtyards, arcades and external wooden staircases. The Chiesa della Purificazione di Maria was first mentioned as a parish church in 1197; its original form dates back to the 12th century. This parish church has a 47-metre-high bell tower and precious marble altars. At the top of a hill stands the Torre Des Tor, an old masonry building that dominates the village of Volano.
The Chiesa di San Rocco contains fresco cycles depicting biblical scenes as well as episodes from the life of Saint Roch. The Battle of Volano is considered one of the most important events in the liberation operations carried out in Italian Tyrol in April 1809 by the Imperial and Royal Army and the Tyrolean rebels against French-Bavarian troops. Memoriae includes the Palio delle Contrade, a contest of skill between four teams representing the contrade of Volano. As part of Memoriae, the festival of popular piety and the rural world, the municipality of Volano organises guided tours of the Chiesa di San Rocco every year on the third Sunday in May.
Hiking around the Eremo di Santa Cecilia
The circular Trekking all'Eremo di Santa Cecilia route connects the centre of Volano with the hermitage over 8.9 kilometres and includes a protected section for experienced hikers. The Eremo di Santa Cecilia is located in the municipality of Volano at an altitude of 770 metres, on the steep rock face of Cengio Rosso. It can be reached by car as far as Località Sant’Antonio in the direction of Monte Finonchio; from there, a footpath leads along the forest road to the Spiaz de le Strìe viewpoint.
The Sentiero dell'Arte is an approximately 10-kilometre-long trail through woods and villages that passes through Volano. It follows an easy-to-walk unpaved route that is also suitable for families, but not for prams. At Dos dei Ovi di Volano, the trail passes tall bird-catching cages dating from the first half of the 20th century. The Magnalonga dell'Alta Vallagarina takes place every year on the first Sunday in September as a culinary and wine-tasting hike along the Sentiero dell'Arte. It is an approximately 10-kilometre, non-competitive hike between vineyards and villages in Alta Vallagarina, with nine food stations and five glasses of wine from local wineries.
