Tiers am Rosengarten – Hiking Trails and Chapels

Tiers am Rosengarten lies at the foot of the Rosengarten massif and combines a striking mountain landscape with trails, chapels and special places to visit. The Tschamin Valley lies between the massifs of the Schlern and the Rosengarten; from Tiers, numerous hiking trails and alpine routes lead to the Rosengarten massif. The “Forest & Water” nature trail is a circular hiking route starting and ending at the valley station of the Tiers cable car. Families and children can discover 20 stations along the way. The ascent leads to the Grasleitenhütte at an altitude of 2,165 m; the hike to the hut begins at the roundabout in Weißlahnbad. This makes it possible to include shorter discoveries and an alpine tour as different options in your travel planning.

Another distinctive connection to the natural environment begins at the Steger Säge sawmill at the entrance to the Tschamin Valley: this is where the “Into the Tschamin Valley to the Rechter Leger” hike starts. The Steger Säge is now a rare example of a water-powered Venetian sawmill. A guided hike over the Taltbühl leads to the protected Totmoos biotope. Along the hiking trails, family-run mountain huts invite you to stop for refreshments and serve South Tyrolean specialities.

Individual landscape highlights also give hiking days a clear rhythm. The Rechter Leger is a particularly beautiful viewpoint and resting place. The Wuhnleger is a pond in Tiers am Rosengarten and also a viewpoint for watching the alpenglow on the Rosengarten. The sunset hike to the Wuhnleger includes a small, typical South Tyrolean Marende snack.

Chapels, history and trails with a special character

The small chapel of St. Cyprian is a late Romanesque building with a barrel vault, a round apse and a low tower. Its exterior frescoes from the 17th century depict the miraculous rescue of the Platzlinderwiese. The chapel can only be viewed from the outside; the interior is not accessible. The Historical Circular Trail begins at St. Cyprian and leads past eleven historically interesting sites in Tiers.

Another historical connection can be seen at St. Sebastian Chapel: it dates back to a vow made around 400 years ago, when the plague reached Tiers. A contemplative trail leads from the centre of Tiers to this chapel. Tiers am Rosengarten also played an important role in the early development of South Tyrol’s alpine region. Culture and landscape therefore do not exist here as separate themes side by side, but shape various trails and destinations in the village.

Getting around by cable car and bus

The Cabrio cable car connects Tiers am Rosengarten with the mountain world of the Rosengarten and takes visitors from Tiers to the Carezza Dolomites ski and hiking area in seven minutes. The CallBus Tiers is also useful for your planning: it has more than 20 stops and connects, among other places, the village centre with St. Cyprian, Weißlahnbad and Oberstraße.
