The landscape around Corvara lies in a broad hollow between Sassongher and the Sella Massif on one side and the high plateau of Pralongià on the other. These distinctive mountain formations frame the village and give the landscape a clear spatial character.
Puez-Odle Nature Park extends across the municipalities of Corvara and Badia in Alta Badia, San Martino in Badia, Funes, Ortisei, Santa Cristina and Selva di Val Gardena in Val Gardena. The nature park covers a total of 10,722 hectares. When planning a visit to the nature park, the division of the municipalities between Alta Badia and Val Gardena can serve as a regional framework on site.
History and Sacred Art in Corvara
Corvara was first mentioned in 1296 in a document by Girardo di Coruera. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina d’Alessandria is Corvara’s first church. It was mentioned in 1347 and consecrated in 1452.
Culture enthusiasts can explore local history, Late Gothic church architecture and the preserved winged altarpiece as three distinct cultural aspects in Corvara. The Chiesa di Santa Caterina was built in the Late Gothic style. Its winged altarpiece from 1520 is the only winged altarpiece in the churches of Val Badia that is still well preserved.
Hiking and Mountain Biking
The high-altitude hike at the foot of the Sella Group begins in Corvara and runs along the eastern side of the Sella Group. It involves only minor elevation changes and is not technically difficult. For planning the day, the key factors are therefore the route along the mountain group, the moderate elevation profile and the low technical demands.
The Sellaronda MTB Tour also passes through Corvara. Thanks to the use of lifts for the steeper climbs, the entire tour can be completed in one day. When planning the day, the lifts for the steeper climbs can be taken into account from the outset; they are part of the route of the entire circuit.
Winter Sports with a Long History
The Col-Alto toboggan run was built in 1938 and replaced by Italy’s first chairlift in 1947. In the 1930s, Corvara also gave rise to the first ski school in Alta Badia.
The Alta Badia ski area has 130 km of perfectly groomed ski slopes. Together with the history of the Col-Alto facility and the early ski school, this creates a clear connection to winter sports that reaches back to the development of the region.
Art and Public Accessibility
A permanent exhibition at Raimond Mussner’s workshop features watercolours and bronze sculptures depicting the landscape of the Ladin valleys. The two art forms draw attention to different representations of the same regional landscape.
The starting point of the hike is accessible by public transport.
