Prizzi combines archaeological remains, sacred art, distinctive landscapes, artisanal production and an event held during Holy Week. At the Museo Archeologico, the exhibits range from finds from the Montagna dei Cavalli area to fossils and minerals; churches, murals and the medieval quarter complete the historical picture. Caciocavallo and the Ballo dei Diavoli add local production and traditions to the picture.

Archaeology and Natural History at the Museo Archeologico

The Museo Archeologico di Prizzi houses most of the finds from excavations in the Montagna dei Cavalli area, which are attributed to the ancient city of Hippana. The palaeontological section displays fossils and minerals from Prizzi and other parts of Sicily. The objects are arranged stratigraphically and document the development of the area over the past 250 million years. The museum was founded in 1999.

Churches, Frescoes and Sacred Art

The Museo San Nicolò, also known as “Tra sacro e profano”, is located in the former Church of San Nicolò, a religious building dating from the 13th century, and was inaugurated in 2017. The Chiesa Madre – S. Giorgio was completed in 1561; its frescoes are believed to date from between the 14th and 16th centuries. The Chiesa del Crocifisso dates from 1670. The Chiesa di S. Sebastiano was built on an older religious structure and houses a white marble holy water stoup, supported by a hand and attributed to the Gagini school.

The Chiesa di San Francesco also makes a strong impression: numerous decorations, stucco work and gilding characterise the vault, walls and chapels. Set into the façade of the Chiesa del SS. Crocifisso is a Hellenistic architectural frieze depicting a bull, which may have originated from the Greek city of Hippana.

Murals and Medieval Quarter

Spiazzo Sparacio in the historic centre of Prizzi is an open-air museum. The oldest surviving visible tower in the medieval quarter was restored in 2013 and opened to the public on the occasion of the Living Nativity, the Presepe Vivente. The murals of Spiazzo Sparacio date back to 16 September 1989. At that time, the municipality invited the three Sicilian artists Franco Nocera, Totò Bonanno and Mario Bardi to paint some walls in the historic centre.

Montagna dei Cavalli and Monte Carcaci

The Montagna dei Cavalli is also known as Monte di S. Lorenzo and is an approximately triangular limestone ridge about 2.5 kilometres long. Its summit reaches an elevation of 1,007 metres. The nature-focused attractions also include the Monte Carcaci Nature Reserve, which is crossed by the “Santa Rosalia” nature and religious trail.

Caciocavallo and Ballo dei Diavoli

Caciocavallo is Prizzi’s most important cheese product and is made exclusively from cow’s milk. Cheese production continues to be carried out individually and using artisanal methods. The Ballo dei Diavoli is one of the well-known events in Prizzi and takes place during Holy Week. The tourism and cultural association Pyrizein develops nature, religious and monumental trails in Prizzi and provides tourists with information, assistance and guided support.
