San Filippo Del Mela combines sacred buildings, historic houses, seasonal performances and regional products.
Churches, Chapels and Historic Houses
The Chiesa Parrocchiale di San Filippo e San Giacomo, also known as the Chiesa Madre, is at the heart of the town’s sacred architectural history. Its construction was begun by the architect Giovan Battista Vaccarini. From 1758 to 1768, Vaccarini was abbot of San Filippo. Construction therefore began during the period when Vaccarini was abbot of San Filippo.
The Chiesa di Sant'Antonio da Padova preserves very old plaster statues of the Madonna del Rosario and the Ecce Homo. The church has no regular opening hours. In the hamlet of Archi stands the ancient Santa Maria della Catena chapel, dating from 1625. It was formerly dedicated to the Madonna dell'Arco. For those interested in culture, this site combines sacred art with a clearly dated chapel history and an earlier dedication.
Near the hamlet of Olivarella is the Belvedere, a fortified masseria dating from the 15th century. The complex includes the chapel of the Santissima Trinità. The chapel adds a sacred architectural element to the historic building complex and explicitly forms part of the Belvedere.
Casa Tracuzzi in the hamlet of Corriolo also has a distinctive detail: its entrance features a wrought-iron gate dating from 1840. On March 6, 1848, a secret meeting took place there between communities from the surrounding area, convened by the Milazzo uprising committee. The gate and the meeting belong to the same house but date from different years.
Festivals and Local Insights
During Holy Week, the Sacra Rappresentazione reenacts the Passion and death of Jesus Christ with 150 actors and extras. During Carnival in Cattafi, the “Scacciuni” masks take part in a procession. The two events take place in different seasons: the performance belongs to Holy Week, while the masks belong to Carnival.
The “Porte aperte” initiative by Ciauru offers guided tours of local businesses for professionals such as buyers, stakeholders and companies. The focus is on the businesses and their inspection, not on a religious performance or a historic building.
The Landscape and Flavors of San Filippo Del Mela
Part of the San Filippo Del Mela area lies on an especially fertile alluvial plain. The sunny green hills of San Filippo Del Mela provide suitable conditions for growing olive groves and grapevines. Restaurants in San Filippo Del Mela offer tastings that primarily use products from the nearby area, known as “km 0” products. The term “km 0” refers to these products’ origin in the nearby area.
