Holiday apartment in Caronia: history, coast and Nebrodi

Caronia combines medieval architectural heritage, local products and the coast of Caronia Marina.

Between Castello and medieval churches

Castello di Caronia was built during the reign of Roger II (1130–1154) and used by his Norman court as a summer residence. It is part of a fortification dating from the 12th and 13th centuries. The complex includes a chapel, rooms from later periods and an underground cistern. Porta Torre has a pointed arch dating from the late 13th century. The churches extend the fortification’s historical scope with their own construction periods from the 12th century and around 1500.

Several churches date from different periods. Chiesa Madre was built in the 12th century, preserves notable paintings and stands beside a medieval bell tower. Chiesa di San Biagio opens onto Caronia’s main square. It contains a painting of the Descent from the Cross from 1771 by Domenico Ferrandini.

Chiesa di San Francesco dates from around 1500. Originally, it was the chapel of the convent attached to the monastery of the Frati Minori Osservanti di San Francesco. The church houses the oil painting “L’annunciazione della Madonna”. Chiesa della Madonna Annunziata dates from the 12th century and was commissioned by Queen Costanza. Chiesa di Sant’Antonio is located on a small piazza named San Francesco. Chiesa di San Francesco links its period of construction with the history of the monastery.

Traces of urban history and craftsmanship

The remains of Ponte Aureliano lie on the Torrente Caronia and are considered a symbol of the town’s past. In Contrada Telegrafo in present-day Caronia, the enclosing walls of the ancient city of Calacte were discovered. Mulino Comune Caronia is an old water mill powered by the Torrente Caronia. Ponte Aureliano and Mulino Comune Caronia, powered by the Torrente Caronia, represent two different historical types of construction in the town’s history.

Coast, Nebrodi and local products

The coastal village of Caronia Marina offers beautiful, clean beaches. Caronia is also one of the municipalities within Parco Naturale dei Nebrodi.

Caronia’s culinary and cultural heritage includes Sagra Porcelli e Porcini. In Caronia, it is dedicated to two typical products of the Monti Nebrodi: black pork and porcini mushrooms. The annual event promotes local products as well as art, culture and traditions. In 2025, it took place in Caronia from 24 to 26 October. Sagra Porcelli e Porcini complements the Nebrodi’s natural setting with a culinary theme centred on black pork and porcini mushrooms in Caronia.
