San Gregorio Di Catania combines impressive traces of volcanism with churches, processions, music, and traditional events. The themes range from the forms of a lava-flow field to the history of churches and processions. The volcanic cavities stand alongside a church and festival culture with its own musical tradition.

Volcanic formations in the Complesso Immacolatelle

The Riserva Naturale Integrale Complesso Immacolatelle e Micio Conti comprises nine volcanic cavities in a lava-flow field with Hawaiian morphology. The Immacolatelle complex consists of four caves.

In Micio Conti Cave, the lava flows preserve grooves on the walls and small remelting stalactites on the ceiling, which were formed by the lava flows.

The four Immacolatelle caves also display characteristic formations. Lava rolls are found at the base of the walls, while rope lavas cover the floor.

The area “Complesso Immacolatelle, Micio Conti e boschi limitrofi” was designated a Zona Speciale di Conservazione by a decree dated 21 December 2015, issued by the Region of Sicily.

Churches, Processions, and Musical Tradition

The Parrocchia Santa Maria degli Ammalati is a 17th-century church. After being damaged by earlier earthquakes, it was restored in the Baroque style. It is also the starting point for all local processions.

The local processions follow the town’s streets to the church of dell’Immacolata opposite. The historic procession ends in the forecourt of this church. It was built on the original medieval settlement in honor of San Gregorio Magno.

Earlier Church History and Musical Continuity

The church of San Filippo also embodies an earlier period: its foundation may date back to the Norman period.

The Banda Musicale “Città di San Gregorio” is also part of the town’s cultural continuity. It is one of the artistic and cultural treasures of San Gregorio Di Catania and preserves and renews a tradition across generations.

Events of Historical and Public Importance

The “Carlo Alberto Dalla Chiesa” Auditorium was specifically designed for public events such as concerts, performances, conferences, and theater events.

The Festa del Santo Patrono San Gregorio Magno, the patronal celebration in honor of the patron saint of San Gregorio Di Catania, adds a particularly traditional accent.

At the Giostra Cavalleresca dei Paternò, more than 200 performers head to the nearby sports field of Piano Immacolata before sunset, where the event takes place.

For the months from April to mid-June, guided tours were offered in the Riserva Naturale Integrale Complesso Immacolatelle e Micio Conti for adult groups of no more than ten people.
