Naro combines a distinctive townscape with sacred art, archaeology and far-reaching views. From its elevated location, the views extend as far as Mount Etna and the Madonie Mountains, as well as to the sea near Licata and Sciacca.

Discover the townscape and sacred art

The densely built medieval village stretches along the ridge of a low hill and stands out clearly from the surrounding rural landscape. The rural surroundings create a spatial contrast to it.

The Chiesa di Maria Santissima Annunziata, also known in Naro as the Chiesa Madre, was built from 1619 onwards on the initiative of the Compagnia di Gesù. It houses a marble sculpture of the Madonna della Catena from the 16th century. The construction period of the church and the century of the sculpture therefore represent different historical periods.

The Santuario di S. Calogero is located on a panoramic terrace at the southeastern edge of Naro. The underground church of San Calogero contains a black statue of the saint from the 16th century, which also serves as a reliquary for his upper-arm bone. A grotto of the saint carved into the tuff is also integrated into one of the side walls.

The townscape thus combines the village ridge with the panoramic terrace of the Santuario and the underground church of San Calogero.

Archaeology in Contrada Canale

The archaeological area with a necropolis is located in Contrada Canale near Naro. It consists of four hypogea, each arranged around a long central corridor oriented from north to south. The shared corridor axis gives the complex a clearly recognizable spatial order.

The largest hypogeum is called Grotta delle Meraviglie. Hypogeum B yielded African oil lamps with Christian symbols such as the lamb, the tree of life and the fish.

Ceramic finds provided clues for dating the necropolis and attest to the importance of the Naro area in Late Antiquity. Late Antiquity is therefore the historical period to which the dating of the necropolis refers.

Museums and exhibitions

The Museo dell'Arte Grafica is located in Palazzo Malfitano.

Castello Chiaramonte is municipally owned and is currently used as an exhibition space for exhibitions and art events. The permanent exhibition Il genio di Leonardo presents around 70 scale models or life-size models of Leonardo's machines.

At the Castello, visitors can operate the models and observe how they work; the Antico Duomo Normanno can only be viewed or inspected from the outside. The two sites therefore represent different forms of visiting.

Easter season and sacred depictions

During the Easter season, Naro stages sacred depictions of the Passion of Christ, which are considered the oldest in Sicily. In Naro, this sacred focus falls during the Easter season, when the depictions of the Passion of Christ are staged.
